To most people they will be looking for the day that civilisation fell the time when law and order broke down, when everything fall off the cliff. I see that it has been happening for more than a century. The time of the British empire, the US hegemony, world trade was developed. That is the start of the death of the present civilisation. The wars which went on previously were expansionist wars, the housecleaning of Europe, the Franco Prussian wars, the Napoleonic wars, they were mere shifting of existing lines. The real change, as far as I can see came with the First World War, the beginning of the end of the gold standard, the coming of the mobile industrialised manufacturing bases and the use of entire regions just for the sake of cheap labour. Every time a country develops enough to allow it's people a decent standard of living the exporters abandon it for the next cheap labour haven. [...]

Successful civilisations throughout history have grown rapidly, appearing unstoppable. Some (like Rome, and Han China) existed stably for hundreds of years. Others, like Alexander the Great‘s Asian Empire did not. But in every kingdom, empire and state that has ever existed (excluding the few surviving today, which are probably not as eternal as we’d like to think), something has eventually changed. Once great empires are defeated by a smaller rival (e.g. Sassanid Persia), and others crumble all by themself. Changing fortunes are one of the clearest signals in history. Yet we have no mechanistic understanding for the collapse phenomenon. It is entirely absent from “Vanilla” Civilization, which assumes that growth gives power and power allows further growth, with the result that empires grow at an “exponential” rate. This is a good first approximation: over time, population has grown exponentially as more people plant more food which feeds more people. The same applies to technology, and social development. Yet these trends clearly do not apply to states and empires, even though it is often within the largest states that population density, technology and social development are highest. After the Sumerian Civilization was established, grew, and expanded greatly, various city-states formed. The formation of many city-states led to the need to rule under one king. The first King was Etana of Kish. After Etna, the city-states fought for domination. This weakened the Sumerians, and they were eventually taken over by the Akkadians. The Sumerians had never been very warlike, and they had only a citizen army which they called to arms in time of danger. In about 2340 BC, King Sargon of Akkad conquered them and went on to build an empire that stretched westward to the Mediterranean Sea. This empire, however, was short-lived.
The Sumerians, led by Ur, again spread their rule far westward. Shortly thereafter, the cities lost their independence forever, and gradually the Sumerians completely disappeared as a people. [...]

A soon-to-be published research paper, 'Human and Nature Dynamics (HANDY): Modeling Inequality and Use of Resources in the Collapse or Sustainability of Societies' by University of Maryland researchers Safa Motesharrei and Eugenia Kalnay, and University of Minnesota's Jorge Rivas, was not solicited, directed or reviewed by NASA. It is an independent study by the university researchers utilizing research tools developed for a separate NASA activity. Analyzing five risk factors for societal collapse (population, climate, water, agriculture and energy), the report says that the sudden downfall of complicated societal structures can follow when these factors converge to form two important criteria. Motesharrei's report says that all societal collapses over the past 5,000 years have involved both "the stretching of resources due to the strain placed on the ecological carrying capacity" and "the economic stratification of society into Elites [rich] and Masses (or "Commoners") [poor]." This "Elite" population restricts the flow of resources accessible to the "Masses", accumulating a surplus for themselves that is high enough to strain natural resources. Eventually this situation will inevitably result in the destruction of society. In other words, the benefits of technology are outweighed by how much the gains reinforce the existing, over-burdened system — making collapse even more likely. "Although the study is largely theoretical, a number of other more empirically-focused studies — by KPMG and the UK Government Office of Science for instance — have warned that the convergence of food, water and energy crises could create a 'perfect storm' within about fifteen years. But these 'business as usual' forecasts could be very conservative." aka, things we have known since 1972's "Limits to Growth" which predicted collapse by 2050.
