Reader X says he doesn't understand why some are insisting that the Russian
speakers in Ukraine are being abused. Here is my response:
X,
The new US-backed government immediately went to work and declared Russian no longer to be one of the official languages. It had always been one of the official languages. It was clearly provocation. He also denied federalization. Now you might not understand what it means for Russian to lose its age-old status as an official language, but it would be something like English losing its status as an official language in Florida due to the predominance of Spanish there.
As for a federalized state structure, that is the type of government the US and Germany has, with the states having certain powers delegated to them.
It would be as if the states were suddenly told that they no longer could elect governors and other state officials. Washington would rule over their governments.
I had a hard time finding this news in American news sources, but found it in other international sites. Obviously, we aren't supposed to know what is really happening in Ukraine.

Crimea was part of Russia until Krushchev gave it to Urkraine. The people
there haven't stopped identifying with Russia. Most of them think of
themselves as Russian, just as you would consider yourself American
if Mexico annexed your state. Same holds true of Southeastern
Ukraine.
When I was in Kiev in about 1970, I spoke Russian to everyone I met and
they answered in Russian, and of course, Kiev is Western Ukraine, so imagine how
much more the easterners consider themselves Russian. They are NOT going to let
go, no matter what.
This is like a family court judge removing your father from your
home and declaring that your mom's new husbnd is your dad. They could go thru
the motions all they want, but you would KNOW he's not your dad. The western-led
Ukraine is NOT their country, at least not as far as they're concerned.
It will be interesting to see how or if the new government pays Russia for
its gas. They couldn't pay before. Poroshenko says he'll pay, but how?
This is a very stupid kind of diplomacy.
All they need to do is restore the official status of Russian and let them
have a federation.
