The first hours of Israel’s Operation Defensive Edge ground phase against Hamas were marked by heavy artillery and air pounding to soften up the terrain as the ground forces went in Thursday night, July 17. The troops advanced in two heads – one north to Jebalya and Beit Lahiya and the other south, where it went into action initially against Khan Younes and Rafah. The IDF took its first casualty before dawn Friday: Sgt. Eytan Barak, 20, from Herzliya, who served in the Nahal Division. In its current phase, the IDF ground operation is focusing on southern Gaza, with the potential for expanding into further areas, as and when the government decides, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Israel deployed ground forces in Gaza Thursday night both because Hamas's terror tunnels into Israel have become an unacceptable threat, and because it had to break the deadlock that had developed between it and Hamas. Until the ground invasion, Israel and Hamas were in a holding pattern. Hamas would not accept a ceasefire deal because Egypt's offers provided the Iranian sponsored, Muslim Brotherhood terror army with no discernible achievements. And absent such achievements, Hamas prefers to keep fighting. Israel for its part is unwilling to make any concessions to Hamas in exchange for its cessation of its criminal terror war that targets innocent civilians in Israel as a matter of course. [...]

28 Palestinians were killed since the Israeli ground offensive
began late Thursday, and as WaPo reports, Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday that he has ordered Israel's
military to prepare for "a significant expansion" of its
ground offensive into the Gaza Strip, declaring that tunnels
built by Hamas could not be destroyed solely through
airstrikes. As The Guardian reports, according to military
analyst Alex Fishman, writing in Yedioth Ahronoth: "The tanks,
which serve as the heart of the assault force, received an
order to open fire at anything that moved." Hamas warned
Israel of the "dreadful consequences" of the conflict's
escalation, while the US urged its close ally to restrict

IDF Hits 260 Targets While Central Israel Remains Under Heavy Fire
Since the ground operation in
Gaza began, the IDF has attacked 260 terror targets, according
to updated statistics released by the IDF Spokesperson on
Friday night. Among the targets that were hit are leadership
and governance infrastructure, weapons production and storage
sites, tunnels and homes of senior Hamas officials. So far,
according to the IDF, 22 entrances to terror tunnels have been
uncovered. The tunnels are used for both smuggling of weapons
as well as for combat purposes. IDF forces have killed more
than 40 terrorists in Gaza and some 21 terrorists have been

Malaysia Pilot diverted INTO danger zone
The stupidity of flying over a
war zone seems to be going unnoticed. They had already shot
down three planes this week. Not saying that this makes it ok,
but there are just certain things you don’t do for safety
reasons. The pilot of MH17 radioed that he ‘felt
uncomfortable’ about the route he was flying while over
Ukraine and fatally altered his course to hostile territory,
according to an expert. Dr Igor Sutyagin, Research Fellow in
Russian Studies from the Royal United Services Institute,
believes that MH17 was shot down by rebels based in the 3rd
District of Torez, in eastern Ukraine, after mistaking his
