THE PATRIOT POST 06/06/2014

THE FOUNDATION

"The law of nature is universal. For it is true, not only that all men are equally subject to the command of their Maker; but it is true also, that the law of nature, having its foundation in the constitution and state of man, has an essential fitness for all mankind, and binds them without distinction." --James Wilson, Lectures on Law, 1791

Obama: 'No Apologies'

Forcefully defending his five-Taliban-for-one-deserter swap, Barack Obama insisted it was ... for the children. "As commander in chief of the United States Armed Forces, I am responsible for those kids," he said condescendingly of our trained warriors. He downplayed the outrage -- primarily among U.S. military personnel -- as a controversy "whipped up in Washington." Furthermore, he said, "I make absolutely no apologies for making sure that we get back a young man to his parents, and that the American people understand that this is somebody's child. We don't condition whether or not we make the effort to try to get them back." What about the six (or more) "children" who were killed looking for this pathetic deserter? And what about a commander in chief who doesn't infantilize our soldiers?

'Suck It Up and Salute'

The Obama administration's contempt for the U.S. military and our national security may be even greater than we thought. According to Time magazine, the Taliban-for-deserter swap "was an ultimate victory for those at the White House and the State Department who had previously argued the military should 'suck it up and salute,' says the official familiar with the debate." Secretary of State John Kerry seemed to think veterans should do the same thing when he ran for president in 2004 as a Vietnam War "hero," despite his slandering of our troops in 1971. He might as well have said in 2004, "Suck it up and salute." No wonder his department is showing such contempt now -- they learned it from a pro. More...

Game of POWs

The Taliban Five released from prison for deserter Bowe Bergdahl will not be the last prisoners the Obama administration plans to release from Guantanamo Bay. A senior administration official said, "There are a significant number of transfers in the pipeline at various stages and I think you're going to be seeing substantial progress this year." So 13 years ago, we started sending our young men and women to the Middle East to protect our national security and now it's all going to waste because of Obama's game of POWs. Meanwhile, because of the trade, the Taliban is changing its tactics in Afghanistan to target "important birds." A Taliban commander told Time magazine, "It's better to kidnap one person like Bergdahl than kidnapping hundreds of useless people. It has encouraged our people. Now everybody will work hard to capture such an important bird."

May Unemployment Numbers

"Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 217,000 in May, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.3 percent," the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Most of those jobs were low-wage positions. The fuller measure of unemployment, known as U-6, fell slightly to 12.2% -- the lowest since October 2008. Yet in March 2007, the U-6 rate was 8%. At the current rate of job growth, it will take years to create the seven million jobs needed just to return to employment levels of seven years ago. Long live the Obama "recovery." No, really -- long live... More...

Anarchy at the Border

The spike of unaccompanied children crossing the border is cracking the defenses along the border to the breaking point. According to The Washington Times, the Border Patrol has diverted much of its energy to dealing with the waves of youth, leaving drug smugglers and their ilk to operate more freely. A Border Patrol memo obtained by the Times found, "The large quantity of DHS interdiction, intelligence, investigation, processing, detention and removal resources currently being dedicated to address [Unaccompanied Alien Children] is compromising DHS capabilities to address other transborder criminal areas, such as human smuggling and trafficking and illicit drug, weapons, commercial and financial operations." The memo continued to say the diversion of resources will hamstring law enforcement immediately and possibly well into the future. This is what happens when Obama creates a culture of open, unquestioning acceptance towards illegal immigration. More...

What Does D-Day Mean to Us Now?

2014-06-06-7656ff48.jpg
Today is the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the American-led Allied invasion of Nazi Germany's "Fortress Europe" that marked the beginning of the end of that horrific regime. It was, and remains, one of the most ambitious military undertakings in all of human history.
The scope of D-Day was immense in every measurable way -- the number of soldiers, aircraft and naval vessels involved, as well as the depth of planning and the level of obfuscation to keep the Nazis guessing as to the date and location of an attack that both sides viewed as inevitable.
One thing that cannot be measured is the bravery of the men who descended on those French beaches that ugly June day in 1944. Ronald Reagan gave one of his most memorable speeches at the 40th anniversary of D-Day in 1984 at Pointe du Hoc, France, focusing on the bravery and faith of men to whom all Americans owe a deep debt of gratitude.
"The men of Normandy had faith that what they were doing was right, faith that they fought for all humanity, faith that a just God would grant them mercy on this beachhead or on the next. It was the deep knowledge -- and pray God we have not lost it -- that there is a profound moral difference between the use of force for liberation and the use of force for conquest."
It is tragic that 70 years after D-Day and just 30 years after Reagan's speech we are losing the recognition and the knowledge that he spoke of. Anyone with a sense of history remembers or at least recognizes the incredible sacrifices that took place during World War II. Yet today, surveys among college students and their instructors show that many of them, as well as many citizens beyond college age, don't know who the Allied leaders were during World War II. They can't identify Dwight Eisenhower or Franklin Roosevelt, and many cannot link the D-Day invasion to the correct war in which it took place.
These people are supposed to be at the forefront of American education, yet they have no functional knowledge of one of the most seminal moments in American history. Perhaps it's a byproduct of the extreme Left view of anti-Americanism that rejects all good things achieved by the United States, even the liberation of Europe and the defense of the American homeland.
Those who do not know the mistakes of history are doomed to repeat them, so goes the saying. Apparently, this lesson hasn't been repeated enough to be heeded. An entire generation of Americans sacrificed their comfort, their well-being, and in many cases their lives, so that we could be free. And that was just 70 years ago. It's bad enough that people don't remember the Founders and the Constitution. Yet here we are just a few decades removed from one of this country's greatest undertakings, and half our population doesn't have a clue about it.
Keep the stories alive. Remember what happened on that day, and share it with others. We owe it to those who served, those who died, and to our children, if we ever hope to live in a world free from the tyranny that our country has faced. "An informed patriotism is what we want," said Ronald Reagan in his farewell address. "[A]re we doing a good enough job teaching our children what America is and what she represents in the long history of the world? ... We've got to do a better job of getting across that America is freedom -- freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of enterprise. And freedom is special and rare. It's fragile; it needs protection." That's what D-Day means for us today.

Rearranging Deck Chairs of the Health System

Fallout from two separate federal failures resulted in comparatively swift movement from Congress in recent days. Both Health and Human Services and Veterans Affairs are under new leadership now, but the problem with both is still deeper.

OPINION IN BRIEF

Senator John Taylor (1753-1824): "Constitutions are violated, and it would be absurd to expect the federal government to enforce the Constitution against itself. If the very federal judges the Constitution was partly intended to restrain were the ones exclusively charged with enforcing it, then 'America possesses only the effigy of a Constitution.' The states, the very constituents of the Union, had to do the enforcing."
Columnist David Harsanyi: "The Colorado Civil Rights Commission has ordered a suburban Denver baker named Jack Phillips to make wedding cakes for same-sex couples, finding that his religious objections do not supersede the state's anti-discrimination statutes. Because if the Constitution should be subordinate to anything, it's the local thought police, hurt feelings and nuptial pastries. ... Forcing Americans to violate their religious beliefs should be avoided unless there is a clear and undeniable compelling interest. There is none here. Is there no other establishment that bakes cakes in all of Lakewood, Colorado? Because I found at least a dozen other bakeries in the town and surrounding areas that would probably be happy to bake a cake for a gay wedding in Colorado -- even though, by the way, same-sex marriage is not even legal in the state yet. ... [T]he idea that people should be left alone to live their lives as they see fit is quickly morphing into the ugly idea that we should all be forced to participate in your life."

Columnist David Limbaugh: "Remember Jay Carney saying that [Susan] Rice was talking about a video not in relation to the Benghazi, Libya, attacks but concerning the Middle East in general? Now the White House is saying that Rice was referring not specifically to the circumstances of Bergdahl's captivity when she said he had served with honor and distinction but to his service in general. Obama and the leftist radicals he surrounds himself with have no clue how most patriotic Americans think. If they did, there is no way Obama would have made such a monumental miscalculation -- unless he really just doesn't care what we think, as long as he can proceed with his dangerous obsession to transform America."
Fred Thompson: "At a White House event, President Obama said, 'I learned so many lessons playing sports that I carry to this day.' Oh, like trading five star players for one 7th round draft pick?"
