affecting our liberties.
DEBT BINGE
As Republicans and Democrats
begin their ritual handwringing over whether to raise the federal debt
ceiling, it's important to understand just how much money Uncle Sam has borrowed in the first three months of the 2014 fiscal year:
"Overall, in the first quarter of fiscal 2014, which ended on Dec. 31, the total debt of the federal government jumped
$613,787,258,252.83
That equals $5,336 for each household in the country."
The current federal debt is well in excess of
$17 trillion - which does not include unfunded federal liabilities. That number exceeds $125 trillion.
PETER KING BECLOWNS
HIMSELF
Rep. Peter King took to the
Sunday talk show circuit to say
that Sen. Rand Paul
"'doesn't deserve to be in the United States Senate'" based on his
accusations against the National Security Agency over its domestic
spying
program." Paul is leading a class action lawsuit
against the NSA over its domestic spying programs. For those keeping
score at home, Rep. King was once a vocal supporter of a real terrorist
organization - the IRA.
OTHER NOTABLE QUOTES FROM
THE SUNDAY SHOWS
There were a few,
but one that sticks out comes from Nevada Democrat Harry
Reid. On the question of whether Democrats are close to killing the
filibuster for regular bills (recall that Democrats recently eliminated
the
filibuster for presidential appointees - the so-called
"nuclear option"), Reid said: "We're not there yet." So it's really just a question of when, not if.
YOU THINK OBAMACARE IS
BAD?
Wait until the federal government bails out the insurance companies who backed the law.
BANNING HORSES
New York City's new leftist
mayor, Bill de Blasio, has made one of his top priorities . . . eliminating horse-drawn carriages in Central Park.
Mayor de
Blasio intends to replace the horses with electric cars. And yes, this
really was a burning issue in the New York mayoral race. Or at least it
was
among the City's enlightened, liberal elite:
"Last
summer, the carriage horse issue came to a head when tennis celebrity
and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) spokesman
Martina Navratilova and others were berated by a driver with shocking
slurs, using the N word, C word for women and D word for lesbians, while
they
were protesting the carriage rides."
GLOBAL WARMING UPDATE
Things are getting so cold in
Canada that Toronto residents are experiencing a phenomenon that's
common in the Canadian arctic, but very rare in the south . . . "frost quakes":
'Water
expands when it freezes
and when it expands in frozen soil it literally puts a lot of stress on
that dirt and will release that energy all of a sudden, very much like
an
earthquake releases that energy and shifts the ground,' said
meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai to City News.
But here's a quick "Global
Warming Science Primer":
May-October: Weather is climate!
November-April: Weather is not climate!
