Department of Public
Safety officials are searching for a man accused of assaulting a highway patrol
officer.
This happened around
2:45 a.m. on January 1st on the U.S. 60 near Extension Road.
25-year-old Rafael
Reyna, III was stopped by an officer and was about to be taken into custody for
suspicion of driving under the influence. That's when authorities say
Reyna turned around and hit the officer in the face -- repeatedly.
Reyna then fled the
scene in a vehicle with only one handcuff still on his left wrist.
The vehicle Reyna was
driving has since been recovered.
According to DPS, Reyna
is a convicted felon and has a history of violence towards law enforcement. He's
described as 5' 7" tall, 200 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He has
numerous tattoos.
The United States
Marshal Service, Silent Witness, Fraternal Order of Police and the Arizona
Highway Patrol Association are offering a reward of at least $10,000 for
information leading to the arrest and conviction of Rafael Reyna.
The DPS officer was
hospitalized and is recovering from his injuries.
