Dear Mr. Allumbaugh:
   Thank you for contacting me regarding immigration.  I appreciate hearing from you.
First and foremost, we need a sealed, air-tight border.  That was promised in the 1986 amnesty program but nothing was accomplished—only amnesty and no border control.  As a result of the 1986 experiment, we now have an 11-million-person illegal immigrant problem that will happen again—only in larger numbers without a secure border. 
   After the border is secure—and only after we are certain the border is secure—we need to reform—not overhaul—our current immigration laws.  Congress has a lot to do to find solutions to several immigration issues.  Labor shortages in the agricultural, technology and other sectors need to be addressed.  I am more than optimistic that a bipartisan compromise could be reached on that part of the problem which could stand alone.  I feel the same about finding an E-Verify solution.  Unfortunately, the majority party in the Senate insists all parts be bundled and voted on in one package which greatly endangers the accomplishment of anything on the overall issue.
   Finally, I cannot support amnesty.  We currently have a clear, longstanding path to citizenship which any human being, anywhere in the world can pursue to achieve the dream of becoming an American, a member of a privileged, exceptional and blessed group.  That incredible privilege cannot be awarded to those who refused to accept and embrace our law simply because they wanted to achieve their own personal goal without regard to our rule of law.
For these reasons, I opposed final passage of the bill.
