Some members of Congress in DC ARE listening and they are as concerned as we are about what is happening to education. A new bill was released on (June 6). I was on a call on June 6th with Todd Stacy from Rep. Robey's (R-AL) office. This bill will return control to state/local entities.
This bill will not STOP COMMON CORE. It will only stop the overreaching hand of the federal government from doing this again in the future and as we fight CC in our individual states we will need the protection this bill will offer to prevent this from coming back again under another name in the future.
It is: HR 5 Students Success Act
One of the high points in this bill is that the federal government cannot make funding grants or waivers contingent on accepting standards.
It returns funding flexibility awarding block grants to states so they can do what they want with the money they receive.
Supports local teacher evaluation standards. Repeals the Highly Qualified Teachers program. Allows states to set up their own accountability systems. The call I was on was recorded and I have included that recording with this email so you can hear what was said and what questions were asked.
Please take the time to carefully review the treasure trove of information provided about the bill. There has been a website set up just for this bill.
Here is the recording of the call I was on. You will get a good understanding of what this bill will and won't accomplish.
WE NEED CALLS TO OUR US REPRESENTATIVE SUPPORT BEHIND IT. The bill mark up date is June 19. We need to make our calls to the committee before that date. The members of the House Committe on Education and The Work Force Committee can be found on the link provided above.
