DRIVE-BY MUTHINGS
If you haven’t watched Dr. Benjamin Carson’s no-holds-barred speech at the National Prayer Breakfast a week ago which - was very critical of many of President Obama’s own policies and delivered with President Obama sitting right there, stone-faced, listening – do yourself a favor and click here.
Conservative U.S. Senators Rand Paul and Marco Rubio voted against the new Violence Against Women’s Act and have taken some heat for it. But they had a darned good reason: The act itself did violence to the Constitution.
Recall these immortal words from Barry Goldwater: “I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is needed’ before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible.” If only more senators thought like Goldwater, Paul and Rubio!
I don’t check my home phone for messages very often. They’re almost always for my kids or some unsolicited sales call. But when I checked yesterday, I found a message saying that I had a call from an anonymous inmate at the Clark County Detention Center which was left last Sunday at around 10 a.m.
Gee, I hope it wasn’t from Assemblyman Steven Brooks!
Did you know that Nevada is one of four states in which stalking laws don’t apply to union thugs? Yep. Grover Norquist, keynoter for tonight’s Lincoln-Reagan Dinner in Vegas, hasthe story.
“Trump Plaza,” reports USA Today, “the Boardwalk centerpiece of Donald Trump's one-time Atlantic City empire, was sold Thursday to a California company for $20 million in the cheapest of a series of bargain-basement deals for distressed gambling halls in the struggling New Jersey seaside resort.”
That would be the same struggling seaside resort that supposedly business-friendly Nevada just lost the Miss American Pageant to.
Karl Rove has declared war on conservatives, saying tea party candidates can’t win. May have been true in Sharron Angle’s case, but she was never the consensus choice of LOCAL tea party activists and lost for all kinds of reasons other than her tea party-like leanings.
On the other hand, tea party-backed candidates such as Sen. Marco Rubio, Sen. Rand Paul, Sen. Pat Toomey, Sen. Mike Lee and Sen. Ted Cruz all lay Rove’s Texas-sized buffalo chips bare.
Democrat County Commissioner Tom Collins says that Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval is a bigger Democrat than Democrat County Commissioner Steve Sisolak is. Gets no argument out of me.
Some crackpot organization called the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is trying to close down the Heart Attack Grill on Fremont Street in Las Vegas “in the name of public health and safety."
Um, who is putting a gun to ANYONE’S head and forcing them to eat those “incredibly large hamburgers”?
Safety nanny and liberal Republican State Sen. Joe Hardy has introduced legislation to force people to wear helmets while skateboarding. Said he’s going to waste taxpayer time and money on such a frivolous bill while the Nevada economy continues to suffer at the behest of one of his neighbors whose klutzy kid fell off his skateboard and hurt himself.
Hardy said his bill is designed to help parents who “will be able to tell their children they have to wear a helmet because it is against the law not to.” Great, so basically the government is taking over parenting from parents who apparently can’t sufficiently parent.
But it gets worse. Guess who gets fined if the kid doesn’t listen to the parent - or the government - and skateboards without a helmet? Yep. The parents!
Joe Hardy is such a schlemiel.
Goofball John Boneventura, the Accidental Constable for Las Vegas, was recently busted for DUI. In what Jon Ralston accurately characterizes as a “barely literate” press release, Boner claims there’s “a smear campaign to tarnish (his) reputation.”
Um, don’t you have to have a good reputation before it can be smeared?
It sounds like Sen. Dean Heller might be softening on his opposition to judicial nomineeElissa Cadish, who he’s been blocking over her past anti-Second Amendment positions. Harry Reid says the standoff issue is “something we are trying to work out on our own."
Uh-oh. Cave-in Alert!
The UNLV Now mega-events center project – heretofore to be referred to as the “Billion Dollar Boondoggle” – has attracted new and potent opposition from MGM Resorts after a possible room tax hike that was initially hidden to fund the project came to light.
Silk purse. Sow’s ear. Nuff said.
WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE…
I got a kick out of reading Nevada State Sen. “Moderate Mike” Roberson’s Twitter description of himself: “Taxpayer advocate and supporter of limited, effective and efficient government.”
“I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size.”
Moderate Mike is a lot of things – some of which you can actually talk about in polite company – but he’s no limited government, constitutional conservative.
FAMOUS LAST WORDS
