MICHELE FIORE NEWSLETTER 02/26/2013

Friends,

Every week in Carson City is busier and better than the week before, and I love making sure the voices from District 4 are being heard.

Last week revolved around three big issues: sex trafficking, online gaming and homeowner's associations.

On Wednesday Nevada's Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto presented AB67 to a joint meeting of the Assembly and Senate Judiciary Committees and a crowd of at least 100 guests. We heard the story of our Las Vegas neighbor Andrea Swanson whose daughter was trafficked by her high school boyfriend. She was a student at Centennial High School in our Assembly District 4, the school where my daughter, Savanah, attended. Amy Ayoud who I have the utmost respect for and consider a friend also shared her story of being trafficked and gave voice to the countless women and children living that horror every day. The hearing on AB67 lasted nearly 4 hours, and even after being called to the floor, many of our peers from Senate Judiciary chose to stay and listen. My heart breaks for our victims, and I'm so thankful for my peers who are making this a priority.

Thursday was online gaming day, and I mean the whole day! AB114 started the day in Assembly Judiciary, and after a vote to pass, it was on its way back to the Assembly floor. Normally it takes a few days, or more, for bills to move around the building; however, the Assembly voted to make AB114 an emergency measure so it could be fast-tracked through the Legislature. In this one day it moved through Assembly Judiciary, the Assembly floor, Senate Judiciary and the Senate floor before it was returned to the Assembly to be sent to the Governor for his signature. This bill has received huge support because it will allow Nevada to continue to be a national and international leader for online gaming.

After the excitement of online gaming on Thursday, I had hoped for a quiet Friday. Instead it was time to start the dialogue on homeowner's associations in the Assembly Judiciary Committee. After another long morning of testimony and strong examples on all sides of the issues, Chairman Frierson appointed a sub-committee to spend more time on all of the proposals and concerns regarding how homeowner's associations are administered.

The days are certainly getting busier, and I'm looking forward to every day between now and June. We don't have a lot of time to get through these incredibly difficult issues; however, I really do think we will have a lot of success finding meaningful and common sense solutions that will make Nevada an even better place to call home.

Yours truly,
Michele Fiore
