MUTH'S TRUTHS 08/13/2012

GOIN’ FISHIN’

As of this morning, I am officially on unofficial vacation until the GOP National Convention in Tampa, though I’ll continue to send out occasional e-newsletters, as well as tweet at twitter.com/ChuckMuth

No, I’m not going to the Convention; I’ll be ignoring it on TV pretty much the same way I ignored the Olympics for the past two weeks.

Which reminds me: I don’t care what other nations do; I still find it terribly inappropriate for the United States to be sending professional NBA players to compete in the Olympics rather than college basketball players.  Celebrating winning a U.S. Gold Medal in basketball under these circumstances would like the New York Yankees celebrating winning the Little League World Series.

Where’s the honor in that?

TWITTER TWIT: “DEEP” THOUGHTS FROM A WOULD-BE CONGRESSMAN

The more I read the tweets coming from Democrat congressional candidate Steven Horsford, the more I’m amazed that anyone takes him seriously as a serious, thoughtful and intelligent candidate.  Here’s one from Saturday:

“Had a great time visiting the @NyeCommunities Children's Health Fair today in Pahrump!”
 a
Seriously?  This substance-free thought was worthy of a tweet by a congressional candidate?  I’m surprised it wasn’t followed by others, such as:

“Really, really, REALLY had fun riding in front seat on the way home!  Wheeeee!!!”

“OMG!  Stopped at Mickey D’s for an Oreo McFlurry. Yum-yum!!!”

“Danny Tark doesn’t want to let you vote w/o showing ID. He’s a real poopy-pants!!”

Are voters really going to send this empty suit to Washington?

TAKING THE T.E.A. OUT OF TEA PARTY

I continue to be harassed by a handful of tea party activists who are actively tilting windmills for the Chris Edwards for Congress campaign in Nevada’s 1stcongressional district over my reminding people that Edwards is the only non-Democrat candidate running for a federal office in Nevada this year who has refused to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge.

With all due respect, guys, your anger and frustration is misdirected.

Remember the genesis of the tea party movement.  “Tea” is actually an acronym for “Taxed Enough Already.”  If Mr. Edwards – unlike almost every other Republican congressional candidate in the country today – is unwilling to sign the Tax Pledge committing to solving our spending problem with spending cuts instead of tax hikes, why are you supporting him?

Sen. Dean Heller is in a tough race.  Sen. Heller has signed the Pledge.  Help him. Rep. Joe Heck is in a tough race.  Rep. Heck has signed the Pledge.  Help him. Danny Tarkanian is in a tough but doable race.  And Danny has signed the Pledge.  Help him.

We, as Americans and Nevadans, are taxed enough already.  Period.  And if Mr. Edwards doesn’t understand and acknowledge that reality, he’s the problem…not the guy pointing out that the emperor has no clothes.

Oh, and by the way: Both Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have signed the Pledge.  Are we really to believe that first-time novice candidate Edwards is somehow wiser and smarter about this issue than the GOP’s presidential and vice presidential nominees?

THE CHOSEN ONE

Nobody eviscerates a pompous politician in quite the same manner as columnistGeorge Will. To wit:

“Barack Obama claims only that his legislative and foreign policy achievements in his first two years matched those of ‘any president -- with the possible exceptions of Johnson, FDR and Lincoln’ in ‘modern history.’  Some Obama enthusiasts are less restrained.  They suggest that among presidents, he ranks as the most learned since John Quincy Adams, the most profound since James Madison and the most visionary since Thomas Jefferson. And he is, of course, the most rhetorically gifted politician since Pericles.”

Why, oh why, aren’t they spreading rose petals before his feet before every speech?  How disrespectful.

POLITICAL POTPOURRI

* I guess the team of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan could be nicknamed R&R Partners.  I like it.  Has a nice ring to it.

* "I firmly believe that Governor Romney made a fantastic choice by selecting Congressman Paul Ryan to be his running mate in the critical upcoming election,” writes James Smack, a staunch supporter of Congressman Ron Paul and incoming Nevada Republican National Committeeman.  “I enthusiastically look forward to working with all Republicans throughout the state to get the Romney/Ryan team elected this November 6th.”

* “Too many elected officials in Washington are still calling climate change a liberal hoax,” intoned Sen. Harry Reid at his self-promoting Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas this week.  “These people aren’t just on the other side of this debate.  They’re on the other side of reality.”  Yes, the side of reality that’s, you know…real.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“And don't get me started on the presumption that we now need the blue-gloved TSA goons to keep us safe. Their very reason for existence is to violate the Fourth Amendment, and they fail the vast majority of audits when a government watchdog tries to sneak a bomb past them, whereupon they move heaven and earth to keep the results secret. A few bombs set off among the crowds outside their checkpoints would cripple aviation nearly as effectively as bringing down a plane, rendering their whole enterprise fruitless.” – Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Vin Suprynowicz
