This morning, I sent you an email with the amazing video of an engineer's wife asking Pres. Obama why he is bringing in foreign engineers when American engineers like her husband can't find a job.
The President found the question "interesting" because "industry tells me that they don't have enough highly skilled engineers."
U.S.-BORN INDIVIDUALS WITH ENGINEERING DEGREES (under age 66)
(based on most recent American Community Survey by the Obama Administration itself) 101,000 -- U.S. engineers looking for a job who can't find any work at all
244,000 -- U.S. engineers who have dropped completely out of the labor market
1,470,000 -- U.S. engineers who are working but no longer as engineers

1.8 million -- Total U.S.-born individuals under the age of 66 who have engineering degrees but don't have an engineering job
There is a lot to say about all those numbers. But one thing that can't be said is that the United States doesn't "have enough highly skilled engineers" among its own citizens.
These numbers were compiled by Pres. Obama's own staff. But he apparently never thought to check on the facts. He was perfectly willing -- just like most Republican leaders -- to simply take the word of the business elites with whom he hobnobs when they claim they have to have more foreign engineers.

The White House sent out spokespersons to defend the President by talking about how not enough Americans are getting engineering degrees.
My immediate question was: How many Americans with engineering degrees don't have an engineering job?
Amazingly just this afternoon, Dr. Steve Camarota of the Center for Immigration Studies has published a report that answers the question.
We will talk more about the meaning of these stats in the webcast. But chew on the numbers.

I am an Electrical Engineer and have found that many young engineers educated in the US are absent of the engineering rigor required to produce quality designs, whereas foreign engineers often ask the tougher questions and are more willing to challenge the team's design. This could just be a coincidence that I happen to work with soft engineers, but I don't think so. Engineering is not like any other profession, you have to be okay with being wrong, and making mistake, and fixing the mistake. I would say that TV is probably one of the big problems with American engineers, it makes childhood too easy, to well laid out. If children are not spending their time with engaging, non-ideal, and challenging activities, they make soft designers. One thing I will say about American engineers is imagination. I have noticed that Indian, or Chinese engineers have a hard time with coming up with fantastic and original ideas.
ReplyDeleteI would say American engineers need more rigor, and Asian engineers need more of an open mind, which is very reflective of the cultures in both places.
As far as engineers coming into this country, a design needs only a couple "imagineers" (the kind you often find in the US) and the rest are rigorous engineers. So, to me it makes sense that we import engineers, it's just supply and demand. We should just be thankful they are still coming here to design, and haven't figured out how to establish a strong R&D community in their home countries, yet.
These numbers don't really have any context. While I'm sure that people with engineering degrees aren't at full employment, there's many, many reasons why people with engineering degrees don't necessarily get engineering jobs.
ReplyDeleteA guy I know personally graduated with a civil engineering degree from a top university, and he decided he'd rather work in an environmental field. He's no longer an engineer, but an environmental consultant. Still makes a good living, but not in an "engineering job." There are many people who I went to school with who went into biomedical engineering, and then went on to med school and became doctors. Again, not an "engineering job," but they did what they wanted. Many people also went on to get MBA's after completing their engineering undergrad and became businesspeople. Once again, not an "engineering job."
Also, the highest paid lawyers in the nation tend to have degrees in engineering before going on to corporate law. They're not getting "engineering jobs," but I'm pretty certain they're happy with their employment.
What I'm trying to say is that engineering is one of, if not the toughest field to go into in college. When you graduate with an engineering degree from a good school, you've proven you're almost cut out for the work ethic it takes to succeed at almost any job. Grad schools tend to accept engineers into all fields moreso than any other undergraduate degree. Just because people got an engineering undergraduate degrees doesn't mean they want to be engineers for the rest of their life.
Use any stats you like but the fact remains...'Obama is NOT creating an atmosphere for ANY jobs!

DeleteI'm just saying that the numbers presented here can't lead anyone to a positive conclusion about anything. Engineering is such a lucrative field that it makes no sense to analyze numbers of "people with engineering degrees who don't have engineering jobs." While it's sad that almost a quarter million people with engineering degrees are unemployed, I stand by my previous points, that the 1.8M number is meaningless.
