Each presidential campaign may have one surrogate speak for as long as five minutes. Attendees cast their votes usually by writing the candidate’s name on a piece of paper that they deposit in envelopes or boxes. The vote counting is public and may be observed by representatives of the presidential campaigns. Caucus officials transmit the results to state party headquarters in Des Moines, where the standings are announced. The first-place finisher won’t be awarded official delegates because the caucus votes aren’t binding.
24-Year-Old Arrested in Los Angeles Arson Spree
Excerpt: Harry Burkhart, 24, was booked for investigation of arson of an inhabited dwelling and was being held without bail, authorities said. He is a German national, but authorities said they didn't know how long he's been in the United States. Police said he told arresting officers he's from Frankfurt. ... When asked at a news conference about reports that an immigration problem with Burkhart's mother may have been a factor, authorities declined to comment. (We know he was having a dispute with ICE and that his mother was ordered deported prior to the arson fires. Harry Burkhart, 24, was arrested Monday after allegedly starting 54 vehicle and home fires which terrorized parts of L.A. for several days. He is reportedly an immigrant from Germany although his van has Canadian license plates. We should get more details Tuesday. Excerpt: The prolonged economic slump has fueled a surge in applications for Social Security disability benefits, with many desperate Americans seeking refuge in the program as a last resort after their unemployment insurance and savings run out. The Social Security Disability Insurance program was created to provide financial support and health care for Americans no longer able to work because of injury or ill health. These days, an influx of applicants with moderate, potentially manageable health issues is contributing to a growing backlog of cases and adding to financial stress on the system, says the Wall Street Journal. Currently, there are 10.6 million Americans collecting disability benefits -- a figure that has increased from 7.2 million in 2002. The recession contributed to the number of disability claims, as those with moderate problems find it harder to obtain jobs: Mark Duggan, a University of Pennsylvania professor, estimates that the economic downturn has increased applications by 3,000 per week compared to 2007. The increase has placed enormous financial strain on the program: it paid out $130 billion in fiscal year 2011, currently runs a $4 billion monthly deficit, and is expected to deplete its reserves by 2017. Romney Iowa event interrupted by Occupy Wall Street protesters

I Love Greed
Excerpt: It turns out that it's human greed that gets the most wonderful things done. When I say greed, I am not talking about fraud, theft, dishonesty, lobbying for special privileges from government or other forms of despicable behavior. I'm talking about people trying to get as much as they can for themselves. (I agree with everything except Williams’ choice of the word “greed.” That word implies rapaciousness, disregard for rules of conduct, and total indifference to our fellow human beings. In an old business exercise problem, the student is offered a choice between one customer paying $1 million and one million customers paying $1 each. One customer is relatively easy and inexpensive to satisfy, a million customers are much harder and more expensive to satisfy. The trap is that having only one customer means he owns you and your business; if you lose his favor, you’re broke. If you have a million customers, if some stop buying, your business can still survive. “Greed” is irrational; “greed” kills the golden goose. Rational self-interest feeds and cares for that golden goose. That’s the difference. Our society has to continuously make a conscious choice to be capitalist or slave. And, when thinking of slavery, almost everyone thinks of themselves as being the master, never stopping to figure the odds against that happening. --Ron P.)

excerpt: I think it was a big mistake for Huntsman to write off Iowa. Today I am convinced of it. Every time the subject come up with Iowans I encounter, not to mention other conservatives here for the Hawkeye Caucii, they lament what might have been Jon Huntsman. While I have issues with his record as Governor, it is much more conservative than Mitt Romney’s and he has a much, much greater cross-party and independent appeal than Mitt Romney. People kind of like he doesn’t give a crap about pandering.
