SOUTH CAROLINA WAITING FOR GOV HALEY TO SIGN IMMIGRATION BILL
Yesterday, South Carolina lawmakers sent Governor Nikki Haley a bill that once signed will require police to check suspects’ immigration status and penalizes businesses that hire workers in the country illegally. Gov. Haley is expected to sign the bill after it passed the state House of Representatives 69-43 following amendments made requiring employers to use the federal E-verify database to check their employees’ residency status. Employers are given a one-year grace period during which penalties are probationary and afterward punishment will escalate with each offense and the employer’s business license being revoked after the third.
