SOO-WEE!!
According to the Nevada News Bureau, Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford “wants to maintain a business-friendly climate” with his $1.5 billion tax plan, including Gross Receipts Tax 2.0.
Kinda like how they made canoeing trips tourist-friendly in the movie "Deliverance"!
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER (I GUESS)
In response to the Democrats’ $1.5 billion “Mother of All Mother of All Tax Hikes” proposal today, Assembly Republicans immediately issued a rare press release.
“Raising taxes is a decision that ignores the economic reality that Nevada faces," said Assembly Minority Leader Pete Goicoechea, R-Eureka. “Raising taxes is not the answer. Doing so jeopardizes the stability of our economy.”
Well, duh. You only now figured that out, Pete? Good grief.
The release concludes with: “The Republican Assembly Caucus is against any tax increase…”
Sounds good, right? Well, maybe.
Problem is, some Republicans in the caucus have said privately that they agree with Democrats; that an extension of the sunsetted ‘09 tax hikes, which are scheduled to expire at the end of June, would NOT be a tax hike.
They are, of course, dead wrong. Those taxes will go down on June 30. If extended, they’ll go up on July 1. That’s a tax hike, plain and simple.
Republicans in the Assembly – other than Tax Pledge signers Hambrick, McArthur, Goedhart and Livermore – have been trying to duck making a firm, definitive, public statement that they back Gov. Sandoval’s no-new-taxes budget 100%...including NO EXTENSION of the sunsetted tax hikes. Because they’ve been so fork-tongued on this issue, today’s statement tells us nothing.
I want to see a written statement, SIGNED by ALL 16 members of the Assembly GOP caucus that they oppose any and all efforts to increase taxes or fees, including any extension of the sunsets, before I’ll believe these people are serious and finally on the reservation.
Or the others could just join McArthur, Goedhart, Livermore and Hambrick in signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge.
I won’t be holding my breath waiting.

ABOUT THOSE BORG DEMOCRATS
I find it somewhat amusing that all of the talk regarding the “end game” for this legislative session has centered around persuading three Republicans in the state Senate to vote for a monstrous job-killing, recovery-retarding tax hike while no one, and I mean no one, is talking about persuading six Assembly Democrats to buck their lame-duck leader and vote for Gov. Sandoval’s budget rather than vote to raise taxes.
I wonder why it is that when Republicans stick together to oppose tax hikes they are labeled rigid and inflexible, but when Democrats stick together to oppose the governor’s reasonable, balanced budget they aren’t labeled rigid and inflexible? Hmmm…..
Are there no Democrats in the Assembly who can think for themselves and would rather see the budget balanced and passed during the regular session than shut the government down and have to endure a mid-summer special session? Have their minds all been collectively melded into one, completely controlled by Speaker John Oceguera?
Um, yes. Assembly Democrats have been assimilated. Resistance was futile. They will do as they’re told…or else. Real profiles in courage there, eh?

ANOTHER UNIVERSITY JERK BLAMES SANDOVAL FOR GLICK’S DEATH
Another propagandist for Hyperbole U weighed in last week on UNR President Milton Glick’s death, laying the blame squarely at the feet of Gov. Brian Sandoval and his reasonable, balanced budget.
“The recent death of President Glick at UNR, which was partially attributed to the tremendous stress he was under, (my emphasis) reminds us that no one is unaffected by the existential crises facing our educational system,” wrote Robert Correales, Professor of Law at UNLV and Legal Defense Chairman for the Nevada Faculty Alliance in an email to Western Nevada College President Carol Lucey on April 28, 2011.
These people are both tasteless and shameless.

ABOUT THAT ANOINTMENT PROCESS
Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki made what I think was a tough but good decision not to throw his hat into the free-for-all Ballot Royale for the CD2 special election. But I found this particular paragraph in his official announcement particularly interesting:
“I firmly believe that political parties have a role in elections and I fully support the Nevada Republican Party’s lawsuit to protect their ability to nominate the candidate of their choice. Voters rely on parties to vet candidates and put their best choice forward.”
First, doesn’t that sound an awful lot like a good party chairman? But I digress.
Secondly, the second sentence isn’t true. Since the GOP has a rule banning pre-primary endorsements, the Nevada GOP actually has NOTHING to do with vetting candidates. Indeed, any and all Republicans can and do simply file to run on the ballot in the primary and Republican voters, not the party, decide who their nominee is gonna be.
That said, the law specifically says that there will be no primary. So to allow the GOP’s central committee to select its one and only candidate for the special election would, in essence, be making a sorta pre-primary endorsement….which the party’s own rules preclude.
Frankly, I don’t see how the party has a leg to stand on.
Now, if the party was smart (oxymoron alert!) it would listen to Dan Burdish and immediately adopt an official party rule mandating that the GOP nominee for any special election be selected by the party’s Central Committee.
You see, there’s already a Supreme Court ruling that says party rules can trump state law. Alas, the party has no such rule in place right now, so unless they get one before filing opens and the court hears the case….tough luck, Charlie.
One final note: With regard to the regular party primaries, why are non-Republican and non-Democrat taxpayers paying for the party primaries of Republicans and Democrats, hmmm?
