On Tuesday, I spoke on the Senate floor about the Biden Administration’s decision to review remittances to Cuba following historic organic protests on the island against the Díaz-Canel/Castro Communist dictatorship. Last Saturday, I sent a letter to Senate Committee on Armed Services Chairman Jack Reed (D-RI) and Ranking Member James Inhofe (R-OK) urging them to ensure the Fiscal Year 2022 National Defense Authorization Act protects the U.S. Department of Defense’s commitment to rebuild Tyndall Air Force Base as the F-35 base of the future. Specifically, the Chairman’s mark, contained a provision that would jeopardize the strategic basing of three F-35 squadrons at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida. Read more here.  On Thursday, I released a statement after the Biden Administration announced its intent to increase access to virtual private networks (VPNs) in Cuba. I also discussed the targeted sanctions against members of the Cuban regime imposed by the Biden Administration earlier in the day. Read more here. On Tuesday, I led a bipartisan and bicameral letter to the Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Tania Reneaum Panszi, urging her “to direct the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to initiate an immediate investigation into the regime’s violations of the human rights of the Cuban people.” Read more here.  On Wednesday, I joined Senator Rick Scott (R-FL), Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and 143 members of Congress in sending a letter to leaders of democratic states around the world, including member nations of the Organization of American States and the European Union, as well as Secretary of State Antony Blinken, urging them to support the Cuban people in their fight for freedom. On Wednesday, I sent a letter to Senators Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Jim Risch (R-ID), Chairman and Ranking Member, respectively, of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, urging them to hold a full committee hearing on Cuba as the protests against the communist regime led by Castro/Díaz-Canel’s dictatorship continue to occur throughout the island. On Wednesday, Senators Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Ted Cruz (R-TX), and I sent a letter to the GAVI Alliance’s Chairman José Manuel Barroso expressing concern that U.S. taxpayer dollars were used for advance purchase agreements with Sinopharm and Sinovac for COVID-19 vaccines. Freden, Interim Permanent Representative of the United States to the Organization of American States (OAS), urging him to “prioritize efforts to ensure that the Interim Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, under President Juan Guaidó, continues to be recognized by the OAS as the legitimate government of Venezuela.” Read more here.  Last Thursday, Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) and I, Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, respectively, sent a letter to President Joe Biden, asking the administration to ensure the safety of Afghans who have worked closely with U.S. intelligence in the country. On Monday, Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), James Lankford (R-OK), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), and I led a bipartisan letter to Polish President Andrzej Duda raising our concerns with legislation that is being considered by Poland’s Senate. The Polish bill would make it impossible for survivors of the Holocaust and their families to pursue claims for restitution or compensation for property stolen by Nazi Germany or the Communist-era government. On Wednesday, I joined Senators John Thune (R-SD), Steve Daines (R-MT), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and the rest of the Senate Republican caucus in urging President Biden to abandon his effort to impose a capital gains tax increase on family-owned businesses, farms, and ranches. Legislation Introduced- On Tuesday, I joined Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), as well as Representatives Steve Cohen (D-TN), and Steve Chabot (R-OH), in introducing the Revealing and Explaining Visa Exclusions for Accountability and Legitimacy (REVEAL) Act , which would incentivize the U.S. Secretary of State to publish the names of human rights abusers and kleptocrats who are barred from entry into the United States due to human rights abuses. - On Thursday, Representative Bill Posey (R-FL) and I reintroduced the Flood Insurance Rate Map Interagency Technology (FIRM IT) Act . This bicameral legislation would direct the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to consult with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), the U.S. Geological Survey, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in order to obtain the most up-to-date information relevant to National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) rate maps.
