MISSISSIPPI ENACTS ANTI-ILLEGAL ALIEN LAW

MISSISSIPPI LAWMAKERS PASS ANTI-ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION LAW 

Mississippi House members voted 70-47 for a bill Thursday that will crack down on illegal immigration by enabling police to check the immigration status of individuals arrested.  House leaders stripped the most controversial provisions of the bill before the vote which is expected to pass the Republican-controlled state Senate and move onto the governor’s desk for a likely signing.

Opponents of the bill were successful in removing a provision requiring schools to count illegal immigrants before the bill went for the House vote though they still claim the measure is racist and would shatter families while reinforcing stereotypes of Mississippians. House Judiciary B Committee Chairman Andy Gipson denied their claims saying, “It’s about the rule of law.” Gipson also said he tried to craft a bill that would survive legal challenges and not punish acts of charity.
