NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICTDear Friend, This past week, the House passed the National Defense Authorization Act of 2023. This bill contains several Republican wins - - Includes a 4.6% pay raise for service members
- Additional $750 million to offset skyrocketing food and housing costs for service members and families
- Overturns Secretary Austin’s order requiring active and reserve component servicemembers to take the COVID-19 vaccine
- Encourages DoD to reinstate and provide full veterans benefits to servicemembers separated for failing to take the COVID-19 vaccine
- Reinforces the rights of parents of children attending DoD schools to review curriculum, instructional materials, and disciplinary policies
- Prohibits the Secretary from modifying the scope of medical care at military medical treatment facilities without first notifying Congress
- Fully funds the National Guard’s operation and maintenance account to support a border deployment and requires quarterly briefings to Congress on DOD support for DHS at the southwest border
- Authorizes DoD to reimburse military families for certain childcare expenses associated with servicemember change of station orders
This package isn’t perfect – it never is – but I’m proud to support our military with raises, assistance, and protections. Please read about my week below:

A Recap of My Week Here’s What I’m Supporting I recently joined a letter to House leadership calling for a vote on the Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection Screening Coverage Act (HR 1946), which would create a pathway for Medicare to cover emerging blood-based cancer screenings, technology with the potential to detect cancer earlier than ever.
I also joined a letter to the Department of Defense Education Activity Director, Thomas M. Brady, regarding the recent surge of obscene, pornographic materials active within the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) school system.
Updates From Agencies Prevent Holiday Home Fires December is the peak month for home fires. Deck the halls with fire safety this holiday season: - Turn off holiday lights at night or when you leave the house.
- Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections.
- Keep candles at least 12 inches away from flammable materials or consider using flameless candles.
- Water your Christmas tree daily, and don’t let it dry out. A dry tree is more flammable.
- Make sure your tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, or lights, and not blocking an exit.
- Don’t overload extension cords and outlets.

| Constituent Casework Corner
An elderly constituent was locked out of their Social Security Administration (SSA) account and needed to update their direct deposit information before their next benefit was deposited. They tried calling SSA repeatedly and could never get anyone on the phone. They finally called my office frustrated. We contacted the local SSA office to promptly resolve the issue.
