Dear Friend,

I hope you all had an outstanding Independence Day weekend! We are fortunate to live in the land of the free and the home of the brave. In Florida’s Second Congressional District, we’re also fortunate to live amongst some of the kindest, most selfless individuals who know the value of giving back.

Here are a few good news stories about our communities coming together to support each other --

Local officials unveiled the North Port St. Joe Veterans Monument, which local veterans are thrilled to see as an addition to the community. The names of 318 veterans are engraved on the more than 5,000-pound block of granite. The monument sits at Zion Fair Baptist Church, the site of the funeral of Staff Sergeant Clifford C. Sims in 1968. Sims posthumously received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroism during the Vietnam War. Read more here.

Florida Gateway College officials opened the Quinn and Keith Leibfried STEM Building with hundreds of people in attendance for a program that featured a ribbon-cutting, a new school alma mater, commemorative items, and building tours.
The program featured several speakers, and the common element in all of their addresses was the importance of the new building and its potential to have a positive impact on the college’s students and the community. Read more here.

In early May, Wakulla resident Keith Godden saw a young man selling hot chicken and pork tamales in the parking lot of a Dollar General Store. When he learned that eighth-grader Adrion Mancilla was out in the heat trying to raise money for his mother’s medical bills, Godden began spreading the word. The community has continued to rally around Mancilla to support his fundraising efforts for his mom, Amanda Kelly. Read more here.
