NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT

Dear Friend,

Speaker Pelosi’s Democrats trampled on your Constitutional rights again this past week with two new gun-control bills. One bill would criminalize the private transfer of firearms and the other would extend the waiting period for a background check. These bills will not thwart criminals or gun violence. Instead, they will limit your ability to protect yourself and your family.

Week after week, the Democrats are working to give the government more power. We saw this with the COVID-19 lockdowns and with last week’s election reform bill. This is unacceptable. They are even disregarding science and resisting sending our kids back to school nationwide in order to appease the teachers unions.

None of this is done in your best interest; this is about power. Your best interest and your child’s best interest are always at the forefront of my mind. You sent me here to represent you and I’m committed to doing just that.

Update from Capitol Hill
Protecting Our Second Amendment Right

This past week, the House passed two gun-control bills. H.R. 8 would subject law-abiding gun owners to criminal penalties for simply loaning his or her firearm to a friend for self-defense or hunting. He or she could face a year in prison and a $100,000 fine. H.R. 1446 changes that period to 10 days and requires a purchaser to petition the federal government for permission to complete their firearm purchase if a National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) background check is not returned within that time.

Legally buying and owning a firearm is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the Constitution. Instead of strengthening and enforcing existing laws, Speaker Pelosi’s Democrats are instead seeking to make criminals out of law-abiding gun owners. And nothing they have proposed will keep guns out of the hands of criminals who aren’t concerned with following the law, to begin with.

These bills will not stop gun violence. They will only harm America’s responsible gun owners.

This Week’s Energy & Commerce Hearings

On Wednesday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Oversight & Investigations met to discuss the vital mission of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

We all value the mission of the EPA in ensuring we have clean air, land, and water for this and future generations. However, burdensome overregulation oftentimes does more harm than good. This is particularly true for communities in our district that are recovering from natural disasters and have large Agricultural economies. I’m glad that our subcommittee was able to have this discussion. That said, our farmers and ranchers, the leading conservationists of our natural resources, also deserve to have their voices heard when it comes to regulations that affect their lives and livelihoods.

On Thursday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Consumer Protection and Commerce met to discuss the impact online learning has had on children since the pandemic started. While I’m grateful that we have the technology to work remotely, the long-term impact remote learning is having on our children is one of the great travesties of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has done an exceptional job in leading the way in reopening our schools. Other states have not been as fortunate.

Parents across the country know that it is in their child’s best interest to be in school. The data backs up that it’s possible to safely reopen schools. Let’s get our kids back to school.

An Important Update from the IRS

As noted in a recent Internal Revenue Service (IRS) news release, as required by law, all first and second Economic Impact Payments have been issued. Eligible people who didn’t receive an EIP, or did not receive the full amount, can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit by filing a 2020 tax return. Those not required to file a return can find information at Claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit if you aren’t required to file a tax return.

Taxpayers will need to know the amount of any Economic Impact Payments they received to calculate the amount of their Recovery Rebate Credit. That information is available using the IRS’s Get My Payment tool. As of January 29, 2021, Get My Payment will no longer be updated for the first and second Economic Impact Payments. Taxpayers can also view or request their tax records at Get Transcript.

Important Note: As we await the next Economic Impact Payment checks, please keep in mind that this process may take longer if your previous payments were not delivered via direct deposit. My team stands ready to help you should you have an issue, but please allow ample time for payments to be sent out.

Constituent Casework Corner

A constituent recently noticed that they were not receiving their mail after paying the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) for a Premium Forwarding Service (PFS). The constituent contacted my office, and we were able to work with USPS to have the fee returned and the PFS honored.
