In Case You Missed It! U.S. Sen. Rick Scott Applauds Senate Passage of NDAA, Including His Secure U.S. Bases Act

This month, Senator Rick Scott and his colleagues worked to pass the final 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which makes critical investments to protect our national security and ensure the United States maintains the strongest military in the world – one that provides not only for the safety of our country, but leads in supporting our allies around the globe. Senator Scott also successfully fought to include his Secure U.S. Bases Act to require thorough vetting and monitoring of foreign military students training at U.S. bases, which he introduced following the terrorist attack at Naval Air Station Pensacola last year. The final NDAA includes: Senator Scott’s Secure U.S. Bases Act to reform and improve foreign military student training programs following the terrorist attack at Naval Air Station Pensacola on December 6th, 2019. The Secure U.S. Bases Act requires a thorough vetting process before a foreign student enters the U.S., requires foreign students to follow rules established by U.S. Base Commanders and vastly improves the security of our military installations, service members, their families and the surrounding communities. $740.5 billion in national defense spending. A 3 percent pay raise for military members. Important provisions to deter Chinese military and economic aggression. A continuation of President Trump’s historic efforts to rebuild our military superiority by investing in the next generation of ships, planes, tanks, and weapons. Strengthening America’s national defense supply chain and reducing overreliance on foreign adversaries like Communist China. Throughout his time as Governor, Senator Rick Scott made it a priority to make Florida the most military and veteran-friendly state in the nation. Now as U.S. Senator and a member of the Armed Services Committee, he is continuing to fight to ensure that Florida remains a national leader for military and defense and that our veterans, military members and their families are provided the support they need to succeed and keep our nation safe.

Sen. Rick Scott Applauds Senate Passage of NDAA, Including His Secure U.S. Bases Act On December 11, Senator Rick Scott released the below statement following the Senate’s final passage of the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).  Senator Rick Scott said, “One year ago, following the horrific terrorist attack Naval Air Station Pensacola, I vowed to do everything I could to make sure our military men and women and their families were safe on U.S. bases. I fought to make sure my Secure U.S. Bases Act, which requires thorough vetting and monitoring of foreign military students training at U.S. bases, was included in the NDAA. I’m glad my colleagues understand how important it is we get this passed to help prevent an attack like this from ever happening again. "This year’s NDAA is a huge win for our nation and for the security of Americans and our allies. It strengthens President Trump’s efforts to rebuild our military after Obama decimated it with budget cuts and cements his legacy as a leader and defender of the American military. President Trump’s efforts to bring American troops home from endless wars, while building the most lethal military in the world helps ensure the overwhelming military might that America expects and deserves. Sen. Rick Scott: Pass Secure U.S. Bases Act to Prevent Another Attack on our Men and Women in Uniform On June 23, Senator Rick Scott released the below statement calling on Congress to pass his Secure U.S. Bases Act following reports of lapses in proper vetting protocols that led to the terrorist attack at Naval Air Station Pensacola on December 6th, 2019. Senator Scott’s Secure U.S. Bases Act, which is included in the fiscal year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), requires a thorough vetting process before a foreign student enters the U.S., requires foreign students to follow rules established by U.S. Base Commanders and vastly improves the security of our military installations, service members, their families and the surrounding communities. Senator Rick Scott said, “Recent reports show a lack of vetting at multiple levels, in both Saudi Arabia and the U.S., that led to the tragic attack at NAS Pensacola. This terrorist should never have been allowed in our country, let alone on an American military base with easy access to American military men and women. I’m calling on my colleagues to eliminate this unnecessary risk by quickly passing my Secure U.S. Bases Act, which is included in the NDAA, to make sure foreign military students training at U.S. bases are thoroughly vetted and monitored. This important step will help make sure our troops, their families and surrounding communities are protected and never have to experience a tragedy like the one that occurred at NAS Pensacola again.”

Sen. Rick Scott Introduces Secure U.S. Bases Act to Improve Foreign Military Student Programs Following NAS Pensacola Attack On March 5, Senator Rick Scott and Senator Joni Ernst introduced the Secure U.S. Bases Act to reform and improve foreign military student training programs following the terrorist attack at Naval Air Station Pensacola on December 6th, 2019. After the attack, Senator Scott called for a hard reset of the program and for all Saudi nationals training in the U.S. to be sent home until the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) completed a thorough review of the program. Senator Rick Scott said, “The safety and security of American men and women in uniform is always a priority for me, and it should be a priority of our entire government. The tragic terrorist attack in Pensacola last year revealed an unnecessary risk. This terrorist should never have been allowed in our country, let alone on an American military base with easy access to American military men and women. The Secure U.S. Bases Act will make sure foreign military students training at U.S. bases are thoroughly vetted and monitored, and that our troops are protected and never have to experience a tragedy like this again."
