NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT

Dear Friend,

What a week! Let me start by thanking all of you for re-electing me to represent you in the U.S. House of Representatives. Serving you has been a true privilege. I’ve seen this district overcome many obstacles in the past few years, and no matter the trial, our communities remain resilient and kind. I could not be prouder to call Florida’s Second Congressional District my home.

We are all still waiting for the finalized outcome of the Presidential race. I’m not going to sugar coat this, it’s going to be a long ball game. I’ve been on the phone with the White House multiple times this week, and I am helping in any way that I can.

This nation saw some major wins on Tuesday night. First, I must commend our Governor and all the election officials that oversaw the election in Florida. They did a wonderful job of counting votes thoroughly and efficiently & quickly. Florida was a shining star in an otherwise messy night. I’m pleased to see that the Florida Republicans picked up two new congressional seats, as well as adding seats in both the State House & Senate. Republican women also made history this year. At least 13 non-incumbent Republican women have won their contests so far – putting them on track to match or exceed the record, set in 2006, of 25 Republican women in the House. Also, we lost zero incumbent races in the US House of Representatives. That is a remarkable feat in any election year.

We have several reasons to celebrate despite not yet knowing the final results for the Presidential race or the Senate. I am helping the White House in every way I can and to ensure that every legal vote is counted. We all want every legal vote counted, but we don’t want the illegal votes to influence voter outcomes.

Here are some of my favorite memories from Election Day:

VA Drive Thru Flu Vaccines End Nov. 13

Wearing a mask, washing hands often, and getting a flu vaccine are three simple actions that everyone, especially people at higher risk of developing serious flu complications, should take to help reduce the spread of flu and help save medical resources needed to care for people with COVID-19.

November 13 is the last day enrolled/eligible Veterans may obtain their flu vaccine via the drive thru locations listed on the Seasonal Flu website at https://www.northflorida.va.gov/NORTHFLORIDA/services/Season_Flu.asp.

After November 13, NF/SGVHS Veterans will still be able to walk up for a flu vaccine (either outside or inside the facility, depending on which facility) or in Primary Care during an appointment. More info on the website above. Please let screeners know that you are at the facility for a flu vaccine.

Economic Impact Payment Request Extension

Image

THIS TUESDAY (November 10th) is National EIP Registration Day. The Internal Revenue Service announced that the deadline to register for an Economic Impact Payment (EIP) is now November 21, 2020. This new date will provide an additional five weeks beyond the original deadline. On November 10th, help the IRS reach people who receive little or no income so they can sign up and get their Economic Impact Payments.

The IRS has already sent nearly 9 million letters to people who may be eligible for the $1,200 Economic Impact Payments but don’t normally file a tax return. The letters, along with the special Nov. 10 event, both urge people to use the Non-Filers: Enter Info Here tool, available exclusively on IRS.gov.

Special note: This additional time into November is solely for those who have not received their EIP and don’t normally file a tax return. For taxpayers who requested an extension of time to file their 2019 tax return, that deadline date was on Oct. 15.

Recent Updates

  • As part of CVS Health's ongoing effort to increase access to COVID-19 testing and help slow the spread of the virus, the company announced plans to expand COVID-19 testing services currently offered at select CVS Pharmacy locations to include rapid-result testing at nearly 1,000 sites by the end of the year. Nearly 100 of these rapid-result test sites are already operational, including one in FL-2. This is located at 2668 Crawfordville Highway in Crawfordville. Patients must register in advance at CVS.com to schedule an appointment. Testing is also available for patients ages 12 to 17. A parent or legal guardian must complete the online registration and must accompany minors ages 15 and younger for testing. Read more here.

  • As we approach the holiday season, we must take into consideration the proper precautions to protect ourselves, as well as our friends and family, from COVID-19. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has a helpful guide that can help with planning holiday events. NOTE - These considerations are meant to supplement—not replace—any state, local, territorial, or tribal health and safety laws, rules, and regulations with which holiday gatherings must comply. Read more here.

  • As of Thursday (November 5th, 2020), data reported to the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration showed that the number of COVID-19 positive Florida residents that are currently hospitalized is down more than 70 percent since July. The Florida statewide positivity rate for new cases is 6.20 percent. Read more here.

The U.S. Labor Department's payroll report, released Friday, showed that the U.S. economy added 638,000 jobs in October and that the unemployment rate unexpectedly slid to 6.9% from 7.9%. This is great news! Our nation’s economy is steadily recovering following the COVID-19 lockdown. I’m hopeful that, no matter the outcome of this election, we’ll continue to see a fall in the unemployment rate, as well as and an increase in jobs in the next few months. Read more about the October jobs report here.

Constituent Casework Corner

After the unexpected passing of their daughter, a constituent contacted my office to request assistance with the Social Security Administration (SSA). The constituent needed to change their grandchild’s Payee Representative from their daughter to them but was unable to reach the SSA. My team worked with SSA to have the constituent established as the Payee Representative in a timely and efficient manner.
