FLORIDA - DUNN DISPATCH 01/29/2020

NEWS FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT

Dear Friend,

This week, I had the opportunity to stand on the House Floor and honor the lives of two great men from our district whose legacies will never be forgotten. As the week progressed, House Democrats celebrated the transmitting of the articles of impeachment to the Senate. We know this is a baseless, waste of time. I remain focused on our district and our nation. I am excited for the Panhandle's recovery after a call with Secretary Ben Carson this week and look forward to all of the ways our economy will benefit from "Phase One" of President Trump's trade deal with China. Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats can continue to "celebrate" their impeachment efforts, but our successes will ring louder.

Please read about my week below:

Congressional App Challenge Winners

Recently, I had the pleasure of calling the winners of the Congressional App Challenge for Florida's Second Congressional District. Lawton Chiles High School students Alex Hu, David Yang, Hayden Kwan and Alex Yaun created an app called "Quick Maths" which aims to increase math skills by quickly solving arithmetic puzzles within an allotted amount of time. Congratulations, Alex H., David, Hayden and Alex Y.! Thank you for sharing your gifts with your classmates, teachers, and our district.

Honoring LTC Daniel Daube

I recognized LTC Daniel Daube, an extraordinary three-time war veteran on the House floor. Daube served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam in both the Navy and the Air Force and he has left an everlasting mark on Bay County and our country.

Standing with Protesters in Iran
Image
Last weekend, Iranian protestors took to the streets and courageously exclaimed their disgust with the brutal and oppressive Iranian regime. In response, Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy introduced a resolution that expressed the United States' support for the protestors and their pursuit of freedom. House Democrats blocked the resolution this week and chose partisan politics over joining together in one, united voice to make it clear that the United States stands with the Iranian people. To the protesters in Tehran, Shiraz and elsewhere – the Speaker of this House does not speak for many of us. We do not downplay your courage, and we stand with you.

Honoring Jimmy Patronis, Sr.

This week, I honored Jimmy Patronis, Sr. of Bay County. Mr. Patronis lived a life of family, entrepreneurship and service to our community. He was a Captain in the United States Air Force and moved to Panama City in 1953. Mr. Patronis and his brother Johnny Patronis bought the restaurant Captain Anderson's, which has become a favorite spot for those visiting the area. He will be missed by many.

Call with Secretary Ben CarsonImage
On Thursday, I spoke to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson and he informed me that more money is coming to the Panhandle for Hurricane Michael disaster recovery soon. This is great news for our district!

Phase One Trade Agreement with China
This week, President Trump signed the "Phase One" trade agreement and confronted a history of unfair trade practices with China. This agreement between the United States and China resets and rebalances our trade relationship and makes both countries and the entire world stronger. Most importantly, and as President Trump has promised to do, it strengthens and better protects jobs for the American worker. The reforms included in this agreement break structural barriers that China has created for our markets and forces them to address the host of incendiary practices they have perpetuated. Our farmers will greatly benefit from this agreement, as China will spend an additional $200 billion on American imports - $40-50 billion on agriculture goods alone. I am proud to support President Trump as he demonstrates his continued commitment to promoting job growth and the growth of the American economy.
Thank you for your continued energy and enthusiasm, as reflected in your letters and Facebook posts. If you haven’t already, LIKE my Facebook page. You can also follow me on Twitter @DrNealDunnFL2.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve you in Congress!

Sincerely,

Dr. Neal Dunn
Member of Congress

Constituent Casework Corner
Hurricane Michael disrupted mail delivery in many areas and caused a delay in a veteran receiving a denial letter in October of 2018 for benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. With limited resources because of storm damage, the veteran submitted their appeal in December of 2018, but, after receiving it four days after the deadline, the VA denied the appeal for untimely filing. After the veteran contacted my office, we have worked tirelessly to get the VA to accept the veteran’s appeal based on the extraordinary circumstances for those affected by Hurricane Michael. This month they finally agreed to accept the appeal and the veteran’s original filing date will be honored.
