This week, Senator Rick Scott released another episode of his series in partnership with The Heritage Foundation: How Washington Wastes Your Money. See previous Washington Waste Wednesday features HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE.
This week’s episode focuses on zero-based budgeting. Government should be transparent and held accountable for how they spend taxpayer money. Every year, the federal government should examine the budget, item by item, to make sure the programs being funded - with taxpayer money - are getting a good return on investment. Senator Scott is focused on reforming the budget process so it works more effectively and efficiently for all Americans.

On the 70th Anniversary of the Republic of China, Senator Rick Scott released the below statement condemning China for denying freedom to Hong Kong. Senator Scott returned from a trip to Hong Kong this week, where he met with pro-democracy leaders, business leaders and religious leaders all fighting for their freedom and human dignity, and standing strong against Beijing’s aggression. Senator Scott was the first U.S. Senator to visit Hong Kong since the protests started.
Senator Rick Scott said, “On my trip to Hong Kong, I met with protestors who are fighting every day for their basic human rights. I heard terrible stories of police brutality, imprisonment and intimidation. President Xi is a human rights violator and a Communist dictator set on world domination. But 70 years of China’s Communist oppression is too long. I’m glad the United States is finally standing up to China as they threaten the security of America and all freedom-loving nations across the globe. We stand with the brave men and women fighting in Hong Kong, and will always fight for freedom and democracy.” Read more HERE.
Senator Rick Scott sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin thanking him for his efforts to reverse the Obama-era government takeover of the housing finance market, which put taxpayers on the hook for nearly half of all mortgages. Read more, including the full letter, HERE.
Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio sent a letter to the Chairman of the National Endowment of the Arts, Mary Anne Carter, raising concerns on the use of U.S. taxpayer dollars to fund an exhibit at Duke University’s Nasher Museum of Art and Northwestern University’s Block Museum of Art, which feature portraits of the infamous Ernesto Ché Guevara. Ché Guevara was an Argentine revolutionary whose sadistic role during the Cuban Revolution included founding Cuba’s first forced labor camp where he tortured innocent civilians. Senator Rick Scott released the following statement ahead of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and South Florida Democrats’ meeting with the Venezuelan community in Florida. This meeting comes after Senate Democrats blocked Senator Scott’s amendment that would immediately grant TPS to Venezuelans. His amendment has the support of Senate Republicans and is the only measure that has any chance of becoming law.
Senator Rick Scott said, “Democrats say they want to support Venezuelans escaping Maduro’s ruthless regime, but like many issues before us, they are all talk, no action. Last week, when presented with my amendment that would grant TPS to Venezuelans and reform the TPS program, Senate Democrats came to the floor to block it. It is shamefully clear that Senate Democrats are using the Venezuelan community to play politics instead of actually working together to get something done. Hopefully, this meeting will finally convince the Democrats to come to the table and work with us to help the Venezuelan people.” Read more HERE.
Senator Rick Scott released the following statement after receiving a letter from Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam. The letter follows Senator Scott’s trip to Hong Kong, where he met with business leaders, pro-democracy figures, and government leaders, including Chief Executive Carrie Lam, to discuss the path forward for Hong Kong amid China’s growing threat.
Senator Rick Scott said, “On my trip to Hong Kong, I met with Chief Executive Carrie Lam and establishment leaders, who are nothing more than puppets for Beijing and President Xi. Chief Executive Lam wouldn’t even answer basic questions about the rights of her people. I received a follow-up letter today from Chief Executive Lam filled with more empty words. She claims to value freedom, democracy, and Hong Kong’s partnership with the United States, but her inaction demonstrates how little she values the rights of the people of Hong Kong even denying her citizens the right to protest peacefully. As Chief Executive Lam wrote this letter to me, a Hong Kong teenager was shot in the chest while protesting for freedom. Now, her government is considering banning people from wearing masks that are used to protect themselves from tear gas or hide their identities. Chief Executive Lam is just another pawn in Communist dictator Xi’s game of global domination. It is disappointing that Hong Kong does not have a strong leader standing for them, but the United States is committed to this fight and won’t back down.” Read more HERE. | ||||
Senator Rick Scott wrote an op-ed for Fox Business about how Democrats’ socialist proposals will bankrupt the nation and deprive future generations the chance to live the American dream.
In the op-ed, Senator Rick Scott wrote, “ I worry about future generations and the freedoms that they might lose if we allow socialism to flourish in our country, and it’s time for you to worry about it, too. Right now, extreme liberals, both in Congress and in the campaign for president, are promoting a socialist agenda that would reverse the progress of our country and strip American families of freedom and opportunity. As the saying goes, the problem with socialism is that eventually, you run out of other peoples’ money. Socialism produces a weak economy that hurts everyone. It deprives individuals of freedom and opportunity, kills innovation and would destroy the American experiment as we know it. Our children and grandchild deserve the opportunity to pursue their dreams in a free country dreams that do not and cannot exist under socialism.” Read the full op-ed in Fox Business HERE.
