IRAN: IS HISTORY GOING TO RHYME WITH 1940 JAPAN? By Carl F. Worden | |
Prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the United States was using economic sanctions against Japanese military expansion in the Pacific, backed up by a heavy naval presence in Hawaii. Instead of coming to the table, the Japanese attacked and sank much of the fleet at Pearl Harbor, thus at least temporarily removing our teeth by which to enforce those sanctions. It was a foolish mistake that resulted in Japan's ultimate misfortune, but nevertheless, it happened.
Economic weaponry is usually preferable to military action, unless you we are dealing with fanatics. 1940 Japan was run by fanatics, and so is present-day Iran.
Based on the fact Iran damaged oil tankers with Limpet Mines and shot down a U.S. unmanned drone in response to the sanctions imposed by President Trump, it does not appear the Iranian Regime is in any mood to discard their fanatical goal of developing an atomic weapon for the sole stated purpose of using it to destroy the nation of Israel.
When you are dealing with out-of-their-mind religious fanatics, a condition that possessed 1940 Japan and now, modern-day Iran, rationality and basic logic takes a dive out the window. In 99.9% of all cases involving disputes between nations, economic warfare usually settles the issue, but radical and extreme religious fanatics do not respond to economic pressure the same as Mexico did when President Trump threatened them with heavy tariffs if they didn't take steps to control the flow of illegal immigrants across their and our borders.
Radical religious misfits often do the unexpected, usually the complete opposite of what any think-tank would predict because their basic motivation is not normal, therefore they are not predictable.
Right now, officials of the Defense Intelligence Agency are convinced the sanctions against Iran are working as intended and that Iran has reached an, "Inflection Point", whereby Iran must surely conclude it is better to come to the table than starve. I'm sure the average Iranian citizen might feel that way, but we're not dealing with, "average", when it comes to Iran's religious leaders. The Iranian Mullahs running Iran are religiously single minded, and they have demonstrated before that they are willing to let their people starve if it means the annihilation of Israel can be achieved.
In summary, there is a very real possibility Iran will do something totally unexpected eventually, either through their proxies or directly, in response to President Trump's sanctions. If the Iranian Mullahs do what Japan did, they will try to destroy our military presence in the Gulf the moment they think they are close to developing a functional nuclear weapon they can use on Israel while our military is busy trying to pick up the pieces.
That is exactly what extreme religious fanatics do!
