LAS VEGAS CITY COUNCILWOMANS MICHELE FIORE'S (Ward 6) FIRST YEAR REPORT

It's Been a Year so Far, and This is What We've Done.

There is no way I can thank the voters of Ward 6 enough. It's been a year since I was sworn in as your Ward 6 City Council representative, and it has been so eventful and memorable. You made it happen, Ward 6. The most important part of representing you has been working with the neighbors to make sure developments properly fit the surrounding neighborhoods. I have worked hard to make sure all new development is harmonious and compatible; this has been the most significant aspect of my job - representing you. It has been such a pleasure and honor, and so I would like to thank each of you!

Besides all 3600 of our Las Vegas City Staff, your Ward 6 Office Team isn't only me; Dan Burdish & Chance Bonaventura are at your service with me, and together we serve you. I'm a loyalist; Dan Burdish has worked with me for the past 10 years and well, Chance Bonaventura, my mom stole him from Albertsons when he was 16 years old, and he's now 22 and has been by my side all these years. These men are loyal, dedicated and the hardest working men I know. Thank you Dan Burdish and Chance Bonaventura for all you do. I love you guys.

In Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, we are in the process of creating a "rabbitat" for the abandoned domestic rabbits at the park. Once this is finished, we will capture the rabbits, spay or neuter them, and release them into the new "rabbitat." Also, with the passage of the new pet ordinance, we now require all new rabbits sold in the city to be spayed or neutered, so we will no longer have this ongoing problem. Further, we are looking into funding to restore the hay barn at the park and convert it into an events center. If the barn cannot be restored, we will build a comparable events center so that the park can be more effectively used. With this addition of an events center, the park will become a hub for many events for the surrounding communities.

Although there is no final outcome for Silverstone yet, we have been working with city staff and the residents to make sure the residents are protected. New Parks Alyn Beck Park The design for Alyn Beck Park is in the final approvals stage, and construction on the park should start within the next 60 to 90 days. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officers Alyn Beck and Igor Soldo were dining at a CiCi’s Pizza when they were ambushed by Jerad and Amanda Miller June 8, 2014. It is past time this park was completed. I want to personally thank Skye Canyon for taking on the responsibility for getting this park completed. Sensory Wall Grand Opening at Gilcrease Brothers Park We had a grand opening of the new sensory wall at Gilcrease Brothers Park. I am confident we will be able to add more inclusive features like this throughout the parks in the Northwest. I would love to be able to create family parks that give proper access to play for all of our children. Inclusive play features are essential, as they provide opportunities for children that might feel excluded by more common elements on the playground. I am so proud to have been able to help bring this feature to a park in the Northwest first. My grand-princesses already have enjoyed this feature a ton!   New Northwest Regional Park and High School We are working with the Clark County School District, Commissioners Brown and Kirkpatrick, Skye Canyon and Lennar Homes to build a new regional park and a new high school at Skye Canyon Park Drive and Moccasin Road. When completed, this park will have baseball and soccer fields, a recreation of a Tonopah/Las Vegas Railroad camp and other typical park facilities. Also, if we can find the funds, we hope to include an accessible baseball/playfield for use with children in wheelchairs.   Bradley Bridle Horse Park Our Operations & Maintenance staff have just completed new improvements to Bradley Bridle Horse Park. The sand in the main arena has been replaced, the sprinkler system has been upgraded, new signage has been installed, and new rock has been laid around the perimeter. The park had been neglected, and we would like to thank the users of this park for their input and patience while we brought the park back up to a standard worthy of the Northwest.

Public-Private Partnerships   We had great visits in 2017 to both Creech and Nellis Air Force bases. It was such a pleasure to meet our local airmen and to be able to see some of the work they do to protect us every day. Our office is working with the U.S. Department of Defense and the Department of The Interior to build housing for Creech and Nellis Air Force base personnel in Ward 6. These partnerships have been successful in other parts of the country and are a win-win for the Air Force, our local developers and the city of Las Vegas. This proposal would provide base-type housing to the Air Force at no additional cost to the city. We are also working with interested parties to build a railroad line from downtown to the Raiders Stadium at no cost to the city. This would allow the city of Las Vegas to participate in any economic gain that is brought to Southern Nevada by the new Stadium Authority.  If this idea comes to fruition, it would be a boon to downtown Las Vegas and would decrease traffic congestion around the stadium during events. We look forward to keeping you apprised of future updates to this proposal.

I consistently work with our Nevada Senators Dean Heller and Catherine Cortez Masto, and Congressman Mark Amodei. I've also met with Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke to discuss our BLM issues within the city. We have a lot of work ahead of us to ensure Las Vegas remains a top tourist destination, and I am committed to that work. They are all great to work with when it comes to Nevada and the City of Las Vegas!   Visits to Washington, D.C. I've also made it a priority to continue visiting Washington, D.C., as often as possible to continue representing Las Vegas on the national stage. I was fortunate enough to be invited to The White House to be a panelist on "Conversations with Women in America".

Upper Las Vegas Wash Vision Plan Sept. 6, 2017, Las Vegas City Council approved the Upper Las Vegas Wash Vision Plan. This plan for developing 1,100 acres next to Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument was put together by the city of Las Vegas, environmentalists, developers, the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, our congressional delegation, and the Paiute Indian Tribe. All these groups came together to put forward a plan to develop the land in a sensible and environmentally sensitive way. Everyone who worked on this project deserves our thanks and our help in making sure we comply with this plan.

Groundbreakings   We've welcomed a lot of new development this year in Centennial Hills and throughout the Northwest. We're still growing in our ward, and I have to tell you, I appreciate every neighbor that has reached out to my office to let me know about how these projects affect you as they come forward. We can only build a better community if we work together, and I know that we're doing that. As a former small business owner, I know that growth is good for a tight-knit community, but only if it's done thoughtfully. I'm looking forward to all the potential in our future.

Special Events   Splash Back to School Join me at the Centennial Hills Community Center/YMCA pool, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive, Saturday, Aug. 4, from noon to 2 p.m. to "Splash Back to School"! Come out to enjoy swimming, food, raffles, games, music, and community vendors before the school year starts. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, please call 702-229-5463. Movies in the Park will resume Saturday, Sept. 8, at dusk. Paper-Shredding Events will be Nov. 10, 2018, and March 3, 2019. Also, we're bringing back our Cinco de Mayo party and our Fourth of July fireworks display next year. Finally, we’ll also have our Spring Celebration andFoster Connection, and we're adding a Halloween party. Look for additional fun events that will be announced in our newsletter throughout the year.
