LAS VEGAS CITY COUNCILWOMAN MICHELE FIORE (WARD 6) PRESENTS THE BEAUTIFUL MONTH OF MAY

The Beautiful Month of May Brings us Warm Weather and Plenty to Celebrate!

Memorial Day is a day that we’ve set aside to feel gratitude for those men and women who have given their lives for our country. We use this day in many different ways. We thank the spirits of the men and women who are no longer here to celebrate it with us. We reflect on the ones we knew. We comfort our friends and neighbors who’ve experienced personal losses, and we visit their gravesites and plant flags. For one 3-day weekend, once a year, we stop and think about how many people have lost their lives so that we can live the way we do. Many of us incorporate barbecues into the celebration, giving thanks to them by thoroughly enjoying the weekend. I want to thank every single person who has put their life on the line to give me and everybody else all of the freedoms that we currently have in this great country so that we can enjoy these light-hearted barbecues and live our lives in a state of freedom. All of those who have passed, all of the veterans who live, and all of those who are currently serving in our military – Please take a moment to feel appreciated today.
Go Vote! Early Voting is from May 26th through June 8th! Make sure to get out there and vote; there are non-partisan races that also need to be voted on! Election Day is June 12th!
Go! Golden Knights Go! The mayor of Winnipeg, Brian Bowman, lost the bet and had to wear our jersey to his council meeting! We’ll be facing the Capitals again tonight at 5 pm for the first game of the Stanley Cup Final!
Last Night the Las Vegas Aces played their first home game at the Mandalay Bay Events Center! They lost to the Seattle Storm 105-98, but I love the Las Vegas sports boom! The Entertainment capital of the world has turned it up a few notches and is becoming an even better-rounded place to live! If feels great to have home teams!
For Cinco De Mayo we had was a wonderful community celebration at Centennial Hills Park. Jose Hernandez and the Mariachi Del Sol were astounding performers, as well as our Las Vegas High School Mariachi band. It was a beautiful day for great music, food, and beverage with friends.

If you don’t know the history of Cinco De Mayo, it’s interesting. In 1861 (after 50 years of independence), the President of Mexico, Benito Juarez declared that the country was too poor to pay its debts to other countries. Because of this, France invaded, turning Mexico into French territory. The French approached the town of Puebla, where a small number of Mexican troops rallied together, fought bravely, and won - even though they were outnumbered 2 to 1! This milestone started the Mexican resistance against French imperialism, and the US came to support Mexico. Together, we sent the French Packing and restored Benito Juarez’s presidency. This victory was inspirational to our Union during the Civil War and was turned into a yearly celebration of Mexico, and is celebrated in America more than it is in Mexico (except in the town of Puebla).
Donut Time! Because all the city employees are sweet, they all get donuts!!

The City of Las Vegas turned 113 this year!
June 8th will be our monthly Movie in the Park! This month we'll be watching Wonder, a great story of a kid overcoming adversity. In May we saw Coco, which was a sweet film that touched on Dia De Los Muertos.
We had a pasta dinner at Arbor View High School for our Silverstone neighbors.
Some of our current candidates came over to reach out to the community during another cozy pasta dinner, and now we have Golden Knights wine!
On June 23rd we’ll be having a picnic at Gilcrease Brothers Park to support Autism and celebrate the grand opening of their new sensory wall.
Happy Birthday to my mom, my daughter Sheena and my granddaughter Jayden! I love celebrating all the years that each of us have been in this family! My mom (68), my daughter (29), and my granddaughter (5). All together, we have the most magical memories, year-by-year.
