Victory in U.S. Senate Rules committee!
Thursday, April 26, 2018
Dear Pastor Lee S,
Yesterday morning, we sent an alert calling on AFA supporters to urge members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Rules and Administration Committee to vote for a bill, S. Res. 355. The bill changes Senate rules on judicial nominations, and it passed out of committee along a party line vote of 10-9.
The Senate rules change will help block the Democratic obstruction of President Donald Trump’s judicial nominees. Democrats have been using an existing Senate rule requiring 30 hours of Senate floor debate on most of President Trump's nominees. At the current rate of the Democratic obstruction, confirming the president's nominees will take 9 years!
The bill will lower the debate time on federal district judges from 30 hours to 2 hours. The bill now proceeds to the Senate floor where 60 votes will be required for passage. This means Republicans will need to pick up 9 Democratic votes.
Many GOP Senators doubt Democrats will support the rules change and want to use the nuclear option to pass the bill by a simple majority, requiring only 51 votes. The nuclear option is a precedent set by former Senate Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid and more recently used by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell when confirming Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.
Soon we will be issuing another alert urging you to contact your senators asking them to support the bill when it comes up for a floor vote. So, be on the lookout for the alert.
Thank you,
Tim Wildmon, President
American Family Association
