Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) has named Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) Porker of the Month for spreading falsehoods about commonsense tax reform. Each year, Americans waste 8.9 billion hours on complying with the tax code, and tax compliance costs the economy $234.4 billion. The framework for tax reform released by the Trump Administration and congressional Republicans in September would dramatically simplify the tax code, lower taxes for every American, and make American businesses more globally competitive. Nonetheless, Sen. Wyden went on a Twitter temper tantrum on September 27, calling the proposal a “scam” and falsely claiming that it “raises taxes on many middle-class families.”
CAGW President Tom Schatz responded, “April 15 strikes fear into the hearts of more than 100 million Americans. That anxiety is borne out of a complex, outdated, and harmful tax system. Sen. Wyden sounds all too comfortable defending the status quo. He thinks it’s a ‘scam’ to allow more Americans to keep their own money. That flippant remark clearly shows that Sen. Wyden is wildly out of touch with the everyday struggles of hardworking taxpayers.” For his dishonest attack on the attempt to reform America’s complicated and costly tax system, Sen. Wyden is the October Porker of the Month. Read more about the Porker of the Month.
CAGW Goes Trick-or-Treating
Just in time for Halloween, CAGW has released its 17th annual compilation of scary, surreal, and spine-tingling tricks and treats for taxpayers. This year’s treats include the Trump Administration’s efforts to roll back the burdensome regulatory web and tame the bloated federal Frankenstein. Taxpayer tricks include the continuing horror story of Obamacare and the attempt by some members of Congress to bring costly and corruptive earmarks back from the dead. Read the full list of tricks and treats that the federal and state governments have handed out to taxpayers in 2017.
CCAGW Applauds Congress for Advancing Tax Reform
The Council of Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) applauded the clearing of a major hurdle for tax reform this month. The Senate and House both passed a budget resolution that will allow tax legislation to clear Congress with a simple majority vote in the Senate. The tax reform proposal laid out by the Trump Administration and congressional Republicans would dramatically simplify the tax code to make filing taxes easier; lower tax rates for all Americans; and reduce taxes on American businesses to allow them to invest, hire, and grow. Passage of the budget resolution followed a CCAGW grassroots campaign that has delivered more than 24,000 e-mails to members of Congress in favor of tax relief.Read more about the progress on tax reform and tell your congressional delegation that you want to see tax cuts this year.
