Should the U.S. be worried about powerhouse Hurricane Matthew? While it is too early to know for sure, forecasters say there is cause for concern. “The threat to Florida and the southeastern U.S. coast has increased,” the National Hurricane Center said Monday afternoon. On Monday, the Category 4 storm barreled its way through the Caribbean. As of 11 p.m. ET, the hurricane center said the dangerous storm has top sustained winds near 145 mph and was moving to the north at 7 mph. It was located about 100 miles south of Tiburon, Haiti. Matthew’s center was forecast to hit or slide very near to southwestern Haiti late Monday and eastern Cuba on Tuesday. For the U.S. there are two wide-ranging scenarios later in the week after it batters the Caribbean: Either a direct hit, anywhere from Florida to Maine, or a miss, with the storm sliding up the coast but never making landfall. Despite the uncertain forecasts, states of emergency have been declared in two states: Florida and North Carolina. [...]

Hurricane Matthew lashed Haiti's southwestern coast Tuesday with raging winds and storm surge that threatened to devastate the impoverished Caribbean nation's towns and villages. The region's strongest storm in almost a decade made landfall on Haiti's Tiburon Peninsula as a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 145 mph. Heavy rain was falling across the country. "We’re expecting a lot of houses to go down because of the poor housing infrastructure in a lot of the rural areas where we work," said John Hasse, an aid worker in Haiti with the humanitarian organization World Vision. "With wind this strong, it will be extremely damaging and dangerous and homes for the average person are made of mud and sticks or poorly constructed cinderblocks.” [...]

The source code for Mirai, a tool that creates what are known as “botnets,” has been released on the so-called dark web, sites that require specific software or authorization to access and that operate as a sort of online underground for hackers. The United States said Monday it was suspending “bilateral” talks with Russia on trying to end the violence in war-torn Syria and claimed Moscow has not lived up to its terms of agreement last month to restore the cease-fire. “The United States is suspending its participation in bilateral channels with Russia that were established to sustain the cessation of hostilities,” State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement. “This is not a decision that was taken lightly.” He said the U.S. also will withdraw personnel dispatched to take part in the creation of a U.S.-Russia joint implementation center that was to have coordinated military cooperation and intelligence had the cease-fire lasted. The suspension, however, will not affect communications between the U.S. and Russia established “to de-conflict counterterrorism operations in Syria.” [...]

The New York Times story that Donald Trump might not have paid any federal income taxes for a long time puts this #Never-Trump columnist in a bind. While it may have been wrong for Hillary Clinton to say half of Trump’s supporters are “deplorable” people, I firmly believe that 100% of his supporters are rallying to a deplorable candidate (though many of them are doing so because they find the prospect of a Clinton presidency even more deplorable). The list of things I am happy to criticize Trump about is very long, from the countless offensive, deceitful and stupid things he has said to the way he has run his businesses, his foundation and his campaign. But one thing not on the list: his effort to avoid paying federal income taxes — so long as he did it entirely legally and ethically. [...]
