This was another busy week in Washington. I spoke on the House floor about the Department of Labor's Overtime Rule and how this regulation could result in lost hours, lost benefits and lost jobs.
I voted to help pass the Iranian Leadership Asset Transparency Act (H.R. 5461) to ensure Iran doesn’t funnel money to terrorists and put American lives in jeopardy. I also voted for H.R. 5931, the Prohibiting Future Ransom Payments to Iran Act to stop the administration from shuttling millions of dollars’ worth of ransom payments to murderous regimes.
Students from the Jobs for America's Graduates organization invited me to join a panel that traveled to Washington from North Las Vegas to a larger leadership conference to discuss ways we can create more job opportunities for Nevada’s scholars.

Hardy Fights to Halt Overtime Rule | VIDEO |
Earlier this week, I took to the House Floor to press the case on why the Department of Labor’s Overtime Rule could result in lost hours, lost wages, lost benefits and worse yet, lost jobs. The Overtime Rule has the potential to devastate many businesses and their employees. In just a few short months, employers will be forced to accept a 100 percent increase in the salary threshold. With our country still slogging through a recovery, such a dramatic increase is misguided and ill-advised. The House has held multiple hearings, we have authored various letters and legislation has been drafted on this Rule – it must not go into effect as planned later this year. I will continue to defend our small businesses and fight against this rule. |
Transparency is Way to Ensure Iran Doesn’t Funnel Money to Terrorists |
With foundations run by Iran’s top political and military leaders controlling a third of Iran’s economy, transparency about regime leaders’ assets is one way to hold the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism accountable. The online accounting of corrupt Iranian officials’ financial dealings created by this bill will serve as an important resource for the American people to ensure money isn’t being funneled to terrorist organizations that are a clear and present danger to the United States. This week, I voted to help pass the Iranian Leadership Asset Transparency Act (H.R. 5461). The online accounting of corrupt Iranian officials’ financial dealings created by this bill will serve as an important resource for the American people to ensure money isn’t being funneled to terrorist organizations that are a clear and present danger to the United States. This bill specifically requires the Treasury Secretary to develop and post online a list estimating the “funds and assets” held by senior Iranian political and military leaders, along with a description of how they acquired the assets and how those assets are employed. H.R. 5461 passed by a vote of 282-143. |
Prohibiting Ransom Payments to Iran |
I never thought I’d see the day when Congress would need to pass legislation in order to prevent our government from paying ransom to the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism. But this administration had the bad idea to make a bad deal with a bad actor, sending planes filled with untraceable cash to Iran. Unfortunately, this week, Congress had to act to prevent the administration from making any more bad decisions. I voted for H.R. 5931, the Prohibiting Future Ransom Payments to Iran Act to stop the administration from shuttling millions of dollars’ worth of ransom payments to murderous regimes intent on killing Americans. H.R. 5931 passed by a vote of 254-163. |
Working to Create Jobs for Graduate Students |
I was honored to be invited by the Jobs for America's Graduates organization to join a panel that traveled to Washington from North Las Vegas to attend a larger leadership conference on ways we can create more job opportunities for Nevada’s youth. The Jobs for America’s Graduates is a fantastic model that I supported when I was back in the statehouse as a State Assemblyman. Both Governor Sandoval and School Superintendent, Pat Skorkowsky support these programs and the Fourth Congressional District contains numerous JAG schools. The JAG National Thought Leader Summit brought in businesses and individuals from Nevada to talk about how we best create an environment for a competitive workforce in the country. Our discussion focused on how we can make sure today’s students in North Las Vegas are ready for tomorrow’s jobs. Appearing with me on the panel were Frank Woodbeck, the Executive Director of the Nevada College Collaborative and the JAG-Nevada Co-Chair; Dr. Rene Cantu the Executive Director of JAG Nevada; Steve Chartrand, the President and CEO of Goodwill of Southern Nevada; and Brian Knudsen, the Principal at BP2 Solutions. |
