THE FINAL FOUR

Anybody who was surprised by Ted Cruz winning Iowa doesn’t fully understand the unique nature of the Iowa caucus system - which rewards targeted, grassroots organization - or the strong social conservative strain of voter that dominates the GOP primary electorate there.

Some historical perspective: Bush beat Reagan in Iowa in 1980.  Reagan won the nomination.  Dole beat Bush in 1988.  Bush won the nomination.  Dole won Iowa and the nomination in 1996.  Bush W won Iowa and the nomination in 2000.  Huckabee beat McCain in Iowa in 2008.  McCain won the nomination.  Santorum beat Romney in Iowa in 2012.  Romney won the nomination.

In any event, we now officially have our Final Four going into New Hampshire:  Ted Cruz, Donald Trump, Marco Rubio and Ben Carson.  Trump/Carson outsiders.  Cruz/Rubio insiders.  Interesting dynamic.

Carson was never going to do well in New Hampshire and will now immediately focus on South Carolina.  Chris Christie is likely to have his brief shining moment in New Hampshire…and then disappear.  John Kasich needs a miracle, and if he can’t find it in New Hampshire, he ain’t gonna find it anywhere.

Last thought: Why hasn’t Jeb! dropped out yet?  He is the “New Coke” of the 2016 GOP presidential election.  No one’s buying it.  He’s toast.  Time to hang it up.

Cheers.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS

“Trump is not finished by any means. Getting 40,000 people to caucus for him even though he had very little organization and had exuberantly defied all the normal rules of politics was an impressive achievement.” – National Review Online editorial
