Fellow Conservative:
One of the reasons why it's so important for Americans to work together to elect conservative leaders to the U.S. Senate is that too many Republicans want to cut deals with Democrats that grow the federal government. The current debate over taxes is a perfect example. Republican leaders in Washington want to compromise with the president and pass a tax bill that he will sign into law. This is a mistake. First, this president is a radical leftist who has no interest in signing good tax policy into law. Just look at the plan he outlined last night in his State of the Union address. He said he wants to raise taxes on hard-working Americans by increasing taxes on dividends, capital gains, 529 education savings accounts, and on all IRA and 401(k) type retirement accounts. Is this someone you think Republicans should negotiate with on taxes? Second, the current Republican leadership has a terrible track record on this issue. They are perfectly willing to cut deals that lead to higher taxes. Remember that Mitch McConnell (R-KY) proudly cut the $600 billion fiscal cliff deal with Vice President Joe Biden that raised taxes on 80% of Americans. And now, some Republicans like Senator Bob Corker (R-TN) are even calling for higher gas taxes so the federal government can waste even more of our money on transportation programs that should be managed by the states. POSTURING OVER PRINCIPLE You're probably asking yourself why Republican leaders – after winning a national election by campaigning against the president's liberal policies – would want to compromise with him on taxes. It's because they believe the key to winning future elections is convincing Americans that Republicans are reasonable, moderate, and sadly ... similar to Democrats. They see conservative principles as a political liability and only give lip service to them when they have to. Instead of fighting for bold reforms that roll back the liberal policies that have weakened our country, they want to cut deals with Democrats – even if that means increasing taxes, spending, and debt. Look at the Senate GOP agenda. They just helped Obama pass a massive "cromnibus" spending bill that funds his unlawful amnesty program, they're making plans to use the budget reconciliation process to pass a tax bill that Obama will sign, and they fully intend to raise the debt limit later this year without real reforms. The GOP establishment in Washington is clearly more interested in making the point that they are bipartisan than making a real difference. This is why freedom-loving Americans must work together to replace liberal politicians in both parties with principled conservatives. SCF is actively working to identify and recruit strong candidates for 2016. With your support, we can change Washington by changing the people we send there. Thank you for standing up for our nation's founding principles. Sincerely, Ken Cuccinelli II President Senate Conservatives Fund @KenCuccinelli / @SCF Please share this on Facebook and Twitter. |
