DRIVE-BY MUTHINGS
His Royal Highness, President Barack Obama, will be in Las Vegas tomorrow proclaiming executive
amnesty for millions of persons living in the United States unlawfully. That he was too chicken to take that action
BEFORE the November elections tells you all you need to know about why every
two-bit terrorist and tin-pot dictator around the globe is standing up to the
U.S. and telling us to pound sand.
Michael Mishak of
the Associated Press and formerly a reporter with the Las Vegas Sun reports
that GOP presidential would-be candidate and former Florida governor Jeb Bush is having trouble getting
traction with conservative Republicans because he has been “one of the country’s
most vocal supporters of academic standards known as Common Core.”
So has Nevada Gov. Brian
Sandoval. Maybe they could run as a
ticket.
On Monday, conservative Republican challenger Lisa Krasner requested a recount in her
race against tax-hiking moderate Assemblyman Randy “Kirner Tax” Kirner (RINO-Kirner Tax); a race Kirner won on
Election Night by just 11 votes out of 20,651 votes cast. (Who says your vote
doesn’t count!)
Now here’s the thing: Recounts very rarely succeed. Nevertheless, in unsurprisingly “girlie man”
fashion, Kirner had his lawyer go to court yesterday to stop the recount! Can you say, “Who’s scared?”
“I represent Assemblyman Kirner in regards to the recount
you have demanded,” wrote attorney David
O’Mara to Krasner yesterday, advising that he was going to “seek a Judge to hear the
matter for a temporary restraining order (against the recount) and/or if
possible, ask that the matter to be advanced on the merits for a permanent
injunction.”
That Kirner would stoop to cheap legal theatrics in an
effort to thwart an effort to discern, without question, the true wishes of the
voters of Assembly District 26 shows what I’ve been writing about him for over
a year: He’s a weenie.
Sure hope Krasner
pulls off a miracle and unseats this guy.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that “A sales-tax
increase pushed Japan's economy into a recession in the third quarter.” Something to keep in mind when Gov. Brian Sandoval introduces “The Mother
of All Tax Hikes 2” in Carson City in 8 weeks.
Speaking of the Sandoval tax hike, conservative firebrand Assemblywoman
Michele Fiore, no shrinking violet
is she, has been named Chairman of the Assembly Taxation Committee.
I wonder if she’ll take a page from former
state Sen. Sue Lowden’s playbook and
nickname it the “Non-Taxation Committee.”
Speaking of committee chairs, conservative Assemblyman Jim Wheeler has been tapped as Chairman
of the Assembly Transportation Committee.
What’s fun about that is that the Nevada Motor Transport Association was
the primary funder of a brutal attack mailer against Wheeler in the GOP primary
last spring. Wheeler knows it. And he hasn’t forgotten it.
I wonder if NMTA boss Paul
Enos prefers ketchup or BBQ sauce on his crow?
On other leadership choices in the Assembly…
The caucus elected moderate Assemblyman Paul Anderson to be its Majority Leader on the same night it ousted
moderate Assemblyman Pat Hickey as
leader. But that was late in the evening
after a very long and contentious meeting and before Anderson was also tapped
to be Chairman of the Assembly Ways & Means Committee.
The problem is, the Ways and Means Committee is probably the
most intense and time-consuming committee in the Assembly. There’s no way Anderson can do both jobs
effectively. If there was, then the
Democrats’ Majority Leader would also have served as Ways and Means chair when
they were in the majority.
It didn’t
happen.
Anderson needs to pick one or the other…or he’ll end up
doing injustice to both.
Moderate Assemblywoman Melissa
Woodbury was named Chairman of the Education Committee. This, too, is problematic.
Woodbury is a public school teacher and
government employee who has never been known to champion the kind of radical education
reform necessary to actually fix our stinkin’, last-in-the-nation public
schools. This is a true fox guarding the hen-house appointment.
As is the appointment of Assemblyman Wes Duncan as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee.
That committee, as Fiore points out in her
e-newsletter today, “has jurisdiction over measures affecting primarily the
State Judicial Department, justice courts, civil practice and procedure,”
etc. Problem is Duncan took a job as a
government employee with the Clark County district attorney’s office last year.
The dog-serving-two-masters problem of being a government
employee and serving in the Legislature at the same time is something
Republicans were virulently opposed to…when it was Democrats who were the
guilty party. Now the GOP looks the other
way. But wrong is wrong.
Oh, and by the way, about that so-called Republican war on
women...
In the last session of the Legislature
there were only two GOP women serving in the Assembly, Fiore and Woodbury. In next year’s session there will be
seven. Even better, with the exception
of Woodbury, every one of them is a solid, fiscal conservative who has signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge.
On Monday, the search committee for a new president for UNLV
voted 5-1 in favor of Len Jessup. The sole dissenting vote went to John White. Who’s black.
Cast by Cedric Crear. Who’s black.
If it would be racist to vote AGAINST a candidate who was
black simply because they’re black, then wouldn’t it also be racist to vote FOR
a candidate who’s black simply because they’re black? I’m just saying.
