MICHIGAN - STOP THE UNIONS ATTEMPTS TO SUBVERT RIGHT TO WORK LAW
Dear Conservatives,
Right to Work laws are just words on a page if they're not vigorously enforced.
That's why National Right to Work Foundation staff attorneys are currently representing 17 employees defending or enforcing Michigan's Right to Work laws in cases before the Michigan Employee Relations Commission and federal court.
And now the Foundation is taking on what might be Big Labor's most insidious attempt to circumvent Michigan's Right to Work protections.
You see, before the Right to Work laws went into effect in 2013, Michigan teacher union bosses devised a sinister strategy, offering wage and benefits concessions in order to extend monopoly bargaining agreements with forced-dues clauses.
Across the state, teacher union bosses implemented this strategy, cutting new long-term deals with their puppet politicians on school boards to keep the forced dues coming for as long as eight and even ten years -- longer even than the term of school board officials.
The scheme was expressly designed to keep the forced-dues gravy train flowing -- and to circumvent Michigan's recently-enacted Right to Work protections.
That's why Foundation staff attorneys recently filed an amicus curiae brief with the Michigan Employee Relations Commission in a case involving the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Local 1085 union.
AFT Local 1085 union officials hastily entered into a stand-alone forced-dues contract with the Taylor School District just two months before Michigan's government-sector Right to Work law went into effect, deliberately and exclusively designed to trap teachers into forced-dues-paying ranks for another decade.
The statewide strategy shows what really matters to union bosses: Seizing as much forced-dues cash as they can, even at the expense of the very workers they claim to "represent."
Defending and enforcing state Right to Work laws is a crucial component of the Foundation's strategic litigation program made possible by the generosity of Right to Work supporters like you.
It's especially crucial we are able to enforce the Right to Work Law in Michigan, a state long dominated by Big Labor's forced-dues political machine.
Every chance union bosses get to undermine or gut Right to Work protections, they'll take it. We must stay vigilant.
Thank you for making this work possible.
Sincerely,
Mark Mix
