GOP Leaders Call on President Obama to Keep Promise to American Seniors |
WASHINGTON, DC - House Republican leaders sent
President Obama a letter today expressing concern about the impact of
the cuts imposed by his health care law on the Medicare Advantage (MA)
program – cuts that are already forcing seniors to face higher costs,
receive fewer benefits, leave their doctors, or switch health plans
altogether. For a president who pledged that if Americans liked their
health plan, they could keep it, it amounts to yet another broken
promise. Signed by Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI), and Ways & Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI), the letter states: “We write to express deep concern about the impact of the cuts imposed by your health care law on the Medicare Advantage (MA) program and the recent action by CMS to fundamentally dismantle the Medicare prescription drug program. These cuts, in addition to proposed rules issued by CMS, will force millions of American seniors to face higher health care costs or lose access to their doctor, their health plan, lifesaving drugs, and the benefits they’ve come to rely on. This comes at a time when millions of other Americans have already lost their health plans as a result of your law. Anger among the American people about the law has already escalated to unprecedented levels as a result of the harmful effects of the first few months of its implementation, and the worst parts of the law, including these consequences for our nation’s seniors, are beginning to have a devastating impact.”Today’s letter goes on to warn that the law will continue to destroy the health care options available to American seniors unless action is taken, and it asks President Obama to direct Secretary of Health & Human Services Kathleen Sebelius to develop a plan to address the devastating impact of the Medicare Advantage cuts imposed on seniors by the law if he won’t work with Republicans to repeal the law in its entirety.
