Several
days ago, Secretary of State John Kerry issued a not-so-subtle indirect
threat when he said that Israel could face an international boycott if
its leaders refuse to give up part of the Holy Land in exchange for
peace with the Palestinians.
Yuval
Steinitz, Israel’s minister of strategic affairs, answered Kerry’s
statement in no uncertain terms: “Israel cannot be expected to negotiate
with a gun to its head.”
The
Obama/Kerry tactics for brokering peace in the Middle East are
misguided, inept, and downright dangerous. Please see my important
update below on the United States’ increasingly adversarial posture
toward Israel – Mat.
Conservatives,
President
Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry both declare themselves
to be friends of Israel. But as Israeli leaders point out, their
actions often tell a different story.
According to the Washington Post, Secretary Kerry warned that Israel’s refusal to give up land for peace and the ultimate failure of peace talks would…
“…incite
Israel’s critics, who are pushing for boycotts against Israeli products
and institutions in a campaign to isolate and pressure the country to
end its occupation of the West Bank…
Today’s
status quo absolutely, to a certainty, I promise you 100 percent,
cannot be maintained. It’s not sustainable. It’s illusionary. There’s a
momentary prosperity, there’s a momentary peace.”
The Post article continued…
“Israeli
economic minister Naftali Bennett, the third-most-powerful figure in
the coalition government, attacked Kerry for his linkage of peace and
sanctions.
‘We
expect our friends around the world to stand beside us, against
anti-Semitic boycott efforts targeting Israel, and not to be their
trumpet.’
The parliamentarian Tzipi Hotovely said, ‘Kerry’s unprecedented threats of a boycott are an attempt to terrorize Israel.’
Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that ‘attempts to impose a boycott on
the State of Israel are immoral and unjust’ and would not succeed.
Netanyahu warned that the boycott threats ‘cause the Palestinians to
adhere to their intransigent positions and thus push peace further
away.’”
John
Kerry’s warning of “boycotts” demonstrates yet again how the Obama
administration’s misguided Middle East policies are having an
anti-Semitic ripple effect in the world community. Such ill-advised
tactics give the impression that the U.S. no longer “has Israel’s back.”
++Boycotting the boycotters.
The
American Studies Association (ASA), self-described as “the nation’s
oldest and largest association devoted to the interdisciplinary study of
American culture and history,” has voted to boycott Israeli
institutions of learning because of the Jews’ “occupation of Palestinian
land.”
In doing so, the association has placed itself at odds with the mainstream of American thought about Israel. According to The Daily Beast,
legislators in several states are now calling for the removal of
“funding from universities that use state aid to fund academic groups
that have passed resolutions or taken official actions to promote
boycotts against Israel.”
We
commend such actions to stop the use of public funds to campaign
against Israel’s interests! Standing against the would-be boycotters
tells Israel we support their interests.
++There is no “neutral ground” when it comes to Israel.
Israel
is unique among all nations. For those who believe the Bible’s
narrative of God’s People and the land He gave them, the Obama foreign
policy in the Middle East is unacceptable.
Our
President’s naïve and dangerous Middle East policies cannot go
unchallenged. We must forthrightly tell our elected officials that
Americans stand in support of Israel – and pray the Lord will intervene
before the United States’ policies do any more damage to Israel and her
people!
We will once again be delivering our open letter with your name
to Secretary Kerry, Members of Congress, and the office of Prime
Minister Netanyahu.

P.S.
I believe that the Obama administration and John Kerry are completely
inept at brokering a deal between Israel and the Palestinians, and the
international community knows it.
Any
“land for peace” proposal is a non-starter for true resolution. The
Obama administration is naïve to believe it will work when it has
repeatedly failed in the past.
Because of the precipitous events unfolding in the Middle East, we are pleased to offer The Patriot’s Handbook of Essential Reasons to Stand With Israel and a Stand With Israel vinyl sticker in recognition of any gift you make to Liberty Counsel to support this important effort.
