Who’s Extreme?Today is the 41st anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision. Since that day, there have been 56 million human lives ended by abortion in the United States. Had those babies been allowed to live, they would by now have accounted for one of every six Americans.Despite temperatures in the low teens, thousands of people came from across the country once again to bear witness this week to the incomparable dignity of every human life, born and unborn. Yesterday thousands of them attended the Opening Mass of the National Prayer Vigil for Life. Today, they attended the March for Life on the National Mall to honor the sanctity of life and to affirm their commitment to changing hearts and minds and laws in defense of the unborn. It is a testament to the American character that more than forty years after Roe v. Wade, this crowd still gathers to demand justice for the millions of innocent lives lost each year. But this should be no surprise. After all, we are Americans. Our founding document states: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.More than four decades after Roe, it is worth remembering today that despite the noise, the American people remain dedicated to that fundamental right to life. And they are deeply unsettled by the idea of abortion without exceptions. This has been a year in which we heard the horrific details of several high-profile abortion cases, most notably the Kermit Gosnell trial, with its testimony on the atrocious indifference to human life at the “Women’s Medical Society” abortion clinic in west Philadelphia. (Gosnell was convicted of three counts of first degree murder and another of involuntary manslaughter.) It is in part because of the terrible reality of such stories that sentiment against abortion has been rising steadily in the U.S. for some time. You might not know it from the talk of the media and the pro-abortion party--which have sustained their outrageous claims that Republicans wage a “war on women” when they won’t capitulate to an agenda of abortion on demand, at any time, at any age, for any reason--but in fact, only a small minority of Americans endorses that extreme position. A recent poll found that “eighty-four percent of Americans would limit abortion to, at most, the first three months of pregnancy.” At the winter meeting of the Republican National Committee this week, a group of members introduced a resolution highlighting how radical the unrestricted abortion stance remains. The resolution (as reported by CNN) points out that among the American people:
And it is we who are extreme?
