Morning Briefing
For April 26, 2013
1. Ted Cruz Will Be at the RedState Gathering. Will You?
We can now announce that Texas Senator Ted Cruz will be joining us as a speaker at the 2013 RedState Gathering, being held August 2-3 in New Orleans, LA.
Ted Cruz’s election to the Senate in 2012 was truly a victory for the conservative grassroots. Since then, Senator Cruz has continued to garner a national following as he’s played an important role in protecting 2nd Amendment rights, fighting Obamacare, securing our borders, and joining Rand Paul’s marathon filibuster. He’s also a longtime friend and supporter of RedState, and has been an attendee favorite at the past few Gatherings.
I’m also excited to announce that we’ll be welcoming Virginia Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli back to the RedState Gathering. He was with us at the very first Gathering in Atlanta and returned again last year with an especially invigorating speech in Jacksonville.
With these new announcements, we’ve decided to extend our Early Bird pricing. You’ll now be able to receive our 20% discount off the registration price through the end of April — Tuesday, April 30. Just make sure you enter promo code EARLYBIRD on the registration page.
More speaker announcements to come soon!
2. From Melting Pot to Pressure Cooker
There is a battle of funny headlines playing out across America.
According to the Wall Street Journal, “Suspects Roused by Jihadist Thought.”
Surprisingly, the New York Times headline was “Boston Suspect Cites Islamic Extremist Beliefs as Motive”. Unsurprisingly, they changed it to “Boston Suspects Are Seen as Self-Taught and Fueled by Web”. Note that now, instead of fueled by religious zeal, it’s the series of tubes known as the internet that did it.
The Washington Post, of course, has to take all the religion out of it and blame America.”Boston bombing suspect cites U.S. wars as motivation, officials say,” reads the Washington Post headline.
Credit where it is due, the Washington Post does a masterful job of blaming America. “[T]he evidence so far suggests they were “self-radicalized” through Internet sites and U.S. actions in the Muslim world.” The Internet and American actions did it.
Time magazine is already exploring whether boxing might have had something to do with it.
It is amazing that within a one week period the media went from speculating that right wingers were celebrating Hitler’s birthday on tax day to blaming Chechen nationalism to hearing the bomber say he was inspired by Islam to announcing it’s not him, it’s us to blame.
Had it been a tea partier who launched a terror attack at the Boston Marathon, the media would spend weeks blaming Republicans, conservatives, talk radio rhetoric, and Fox News hosts for inspiring the bombing.
But because the bomber himself says he was inspired by his religious faith and that faith happens to be Islam, the media will ascribe other reasons to explain the attack that are more palatable to the its liberal sensibilities. As often happens in these cases, the media quickly descends into blaming America first.
One of the most insane pieces of the whole past week was from Marc Ambinder, a respected journalist, who explicitly says we should blame America, not Islam, for the bombers.
So stuck in a liberal world view blinding him to reality, along with most of the press corps in America, he can’t see to the actual nugget of truth he’s trying to grasp for — liberalism. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
3. More immigration bill disappointments: the “back tax” provision is a fraud, and provisional residents CAN get welfare
It gives me no pleasure to say this, but it’s increasingly clear that Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) hasn’t completely read the immigration bill he’s touting. It seems like every day, another claim made by defenders of the Gang of Eight bill gets shot down by critics who actually have read through all 844 pages.
Personally, I was most immediately and deeply skeptical of the claim that our “new Americans” would be expected to pay back taxes and fines, in exchange for amnesty. I’ve just never been able to imagine such an imperative actually working in practice, particularly when administered by the same government that insists those 11 or 12 million illegal aliens are untraceable phantoms who can’t possibly be arrested or deported. Not to mention that a lot of these people would end up with zero or negative tax liability, which means “paying back taxes” would more likely end up involving the government cutting them a check, if rules were not carefully written to prevent it. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
4. Get Ready for House Immigration Gangsters
It looks like we might have to get more conservative-Americans to do the job that the GOP-controlled House won’t do.
In what has become a familiar routine, instead of fighting against the heaping pile of immigration deform emanating from the Democrat Senate, House Republicans are looking to tweak it with some honey and sugar in order to inveigle conservatives into eating this excrement sandwich. Whereas Republicans in the Senate outsourced their principles on the issue to Chuck Schumer, some House Republicans are looking to Luis Gutierrez, an even more extreme leftist, for guidance. For months, the House gang of 8, comprised of Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-CA) Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.), Raúl Labrador (R-Idaho), Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.), John Yarmuth (D-Ky.), Sam Johnson (R-Texas) and John Carter (R-Texas), have been meeting behind closed doors with special interests to iron out a similar deform bill to the Senate’s version. Paul Ryan seems to merit a separate one-on-one relationship with Gutiérrez. . . . please click here for the rest of the post →
