Russia
Russia has at least two official surveillance agencies. One agency, the Federal Security Service (Federal'naya sluzhba bezopasnosti, or FSB) not only possesses investigatory powers, but even has its own troops. FSB also is authorized to conduct intelligence operations inside and outside Russia to enhance "the economic, scientific-technical and defense potential" of Russia. Thanks to regulations such as SORM (System for Ensuring Investigated Activity), FSB essentially has the power to monitor Internet transmissions coming in and out of Russia.
In addition, the Federal Agency for Government Communications and Information (Federal'noye agentstvo paravitel'stvennykh svyazi i informatsii, or FAPSI) apparently has unlimited technical capabilities for monitoring communications and gathering intelligence, including monitoring of private networks. It too has its own troops (estimated at 54,000).
People's Republic of China
The People's Republic of China (PRC) created a Ministry of State Security in 1983. Not surprisingly, one of its chief tasks is to stop "enemy agents, spies and counterrevolutionary activities designed to ... overthrow China's socialist system." As a part of this effort, a special Internet police agency was started in 1998, which has launched several cybersurveillance initiatives to track dissidents as well as conduct espionage on foreigners. In addition, Chinese authorities are planning to build more advanced Internet monitoring systems that rival those of the West, including the United States' Carnivore.

I have a theory that's been nagging me for months, and I hope I'm completely wrong.

My theory would help explain why Barack Obama appeared unfocused, overconfident, even annoyingly arrogant during the first presidential debate — obviously taking what could be a "game changer" too lightly — with the result that Mitt Romney didn't so much win their first in-person encounter as Obama lost it by default.


An election with no precedent

Here's my theory:

Suppose you were the most powerful man on the planet — someone who could change the ruling structure of Egypt and Libya by the command of his voice, inspiring the "Arab Spring," bringing down two longtime Middle East strongmen, and "making the world safe for the Muslim Brotherhood" (with its stated goal of destroying Western Civilization and replacing it with Islamic Sharia) in the process.

Suppose you were also the most powerful communist leader in history — a Marxist ideologue who reigned supreme over the most powerful nation ever, the United States of America, repeatedly violating the Constitution, defying the courts, ignoring the will of the people as enacted by Congress, and in general showing deeply-held contempt for the rule of law.

PASTORS REFUSE TO BE SILENCED BY ATHEISTS OR THE LEFT

This week on 'The Hal Lindsey Report'
On Sunday, October 7, more than 1,500 pastors across America defied the US government. 

No embassy walls were toppled or flags torn down and burned. No property was damaged and no one was wounded or killed. No troops were called up to restore order. 

Yet these pastors openly - and some might say brazenly - defied the government of the United States. 

To be accurate, they defied the Internal Revenue Service, which is an arm of the US government. More specifically, they defied an obscure and flawed amendment added to the federal tax code in 1954. 

This amendment - promoted by and named for then-Texas Senator Lyndon B. Johnson - declares that an organization that holds 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status "may not participate or intervene in any political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public office." 

Since then, atheist organizations and Left-leaning politicians have used the Johnson amendment to selectively intimidate churches, pastors, and ministries into silence on moral and cultural issues that might have any remotely political connection.

JOE BIDEN: FROM GAFFE FACTORY TO LAUGH FACTORY

Bottom line on last night’s vice presidential debate: Paul Ryan looked serious and up to the task of serving as vice president under Mitt Romney.  He did nothing to scare independents or lessen the support he already enjoys with the GOP’s conservative base.  To that end, he was a winner.

One bad spot though: Joe Biden nailed Ryan effectively as a hypocrite for opposing the stimulus…but then requesting stimulus money for his district.  Talking the talk; not walking the walk.  That kind of inconsistency hurts a politician’s credibility.  Still, it was just a flesh wound in the debate.

Now as to Biden…

He came off looking like that mechanical/maniacal clown at the miniature golf course in theAdam Sandler movie “Happy Gilmore.”  Click here for a 52-second clip of the scene I’m talking about in case you haven’t seen the movie.
