It’s better for immigrants if they learn English
The Press-Register’s June 21 editorial praised the Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency for “doing the right and smart thing” by providing hurricane information in Spanish.
The tax dollars wasted by EMA staff and the printing costs would be unnecessary if immigrants learned English.
Does the Mobile EMA provide such information for the Vietnamese living in Bayou La Batre? Or for recently arrived African immigrants? This is political correctness run amok.
Before the progressive elitists think this is the voice of another redneck xenophobe, let me say that Dutch and French are spoken in our home and my wife is a legal immigrant from the Netherlands.
A friend’s teenage son went to Switzerland in the Foreign Exchange Program. One person in his host family spoke English, but no one else at his school did. He learned Swiss-German in four weeks and received failing grades in those weeks — no coddling, no excuses.
The Press-Register should be ashamed for praising the waste of taxpayer funds on blatant racial stereotyping.
Further, the biggest problem immigrants face is their inability to speak English. If the Press-Register editorial board were truly concerned, it would speak out often for all immigrants to learn English, whether they are Vietnamese, Cambodian, African or Mexican.
