POLITICAL DIGEST 06/07/2012 CONSERVATIVE


Walker Wins Wisconsin (and other Primary Election news)
The polls showing Barrett closing the gap were wrong, particularly the poll by left-leaning Public Policy Polling, showing a margin of only 3% for Walker, within the margin of ACORN fraud. (In their lest poll, PPP left out the third fringe candidate, who had been polling at 2%. Wonder why?) Barrett’s release of internal polls showing a dead heat, were, unsurprisingly, lies to generate turnout. A big turnout was supposed to help Barrett—it didn’t. So my prediction of a 4% Walker win was off, as he won by 6.9%, the first governor to survive a recall vote. Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch won by almost the same margin. Liberals took time out from trying to raise a billion dollars for Obama at endless fundraisers to condemn the results as being about big money in politics. Democrats, who were calling Wisconsin a tune-up for November, now say that it will have no impact. They may be right, as exit polls suggest a large number of Walker voters still support Obama (though the exit polls were badly flawed on the out-come). But the economy and growing debt may change voters’ minds by November. Interestingly, the exit polls also showed that single people went over-whelmingly for Barrett, while married people, being more settled and established, with a larger stake in the future, were strongly for Walker. And I think there had to be a number of voters who supported Walker, from households with union members, who were grateful for the secret ballot to keep family peace.

Walker’s victory speech was perfect in tone, no gloating, lots of conciliatory out-reach, a promise to work together. He impresses. He’s now the best-known Governor in America. If he ever changes his title to President, he can thank the SEIU, as Coolidge won because of his stand against the Boston Police Strike of 1919, saying that there was “no right to strike against the public safety, anytime, anywhere,” when he was Governor of Massachusetts.

Wisconsin wasn’t an unmixed result. Three of the four Republican Senators facing recall votes won easily, but the fourth, Sen. Van Wanggaard, appears to have lost by about 1%, fewer than 800 votes, giving control of the WI Senate to Democrats by one vote. This margin, in my experience, will likely withstand a recount, unless there is evidence of fraud or irregularities in Democrat-controlled Racine, not impossible. No word yet if Senator-Elect John Lehman (D-SEIU) will go to Madison to be sworn in, or flee directly to a motel in Rockford, IL to shirk his duties in the grand tradition of Wisconsin Democrats.

In other election news, Voters in San Diego and San Jose, CA slapped down the public unions by voting for public employee pension reforms (cuts) by large margins. Maybe voters are starting to get the fiscal message that the party is over. It’s past time. We can only hope.

In New Jersey, US Representative Bill Pascrell (D-CAIR), easily defeated fellow liberal Democrat US Rep. Steve Rothman in the Democrat primary. There is a large contingent of Arab Muslims in the district who made Rothman’s religion an issue. “One side says, ‘We want this Jew out of office’ and, frankly, it’s pretty unsettling,” Ben Chouake, president of NORPAC, a pro-Israel political action committee based in Englewood Cliffs, told the Free Beacon. “They emphasized [Rothman] is a Jewish congressman.” Pascrell refused to condemn to actions of his Muslim supporters, who claimed Rothman was loyal to Israel, not America. Most Jews, being liberals, still won’t notice that their fellow liberals despise them for the same reason that liberals find it perfectly fine to discriminate against Asians. Jews, like Asians, tend to be oriented towards family and education, thus entrepreneurial and successful in a free market economy, and success is a sin to liberals, making you deserving of attack and discrimination. (Jewish and Asian success has, in my opinion, very little to do with race and everything to do with culture. Yet liberals insist on reinforcing the poverty-orientated culture of our inner cities, despite things getting steadily worse for minorities under their programs. They care about feeling good about caring for people, not in the actual results and real pain they inflict on real people.)

Book Recommendation: Conscience of a Conservative By Barry Goldwater
Thanks to the recommendation of a friend, I just re-read this book which I first read in high school, over 50 years ago. It helped me form my own conservative political philosophy, and made me a Goldwater Volunteer in 1964—at least until I reported to Parris Island for Marine boot camp in August. It has stood the test of time well. The only area where I disagree with the Senator is his contention that the constitution does not give the federal government the power to deal with school segregation, though he personally believed it was a bad thing. The constitution states, “nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” I would argue that allowing any level of government to discriminate on the basis of race, regardless if that discrimination is the old “separate but demonstrably-unequal” segregated southern school system, the current pernicious discrimination of affirmative action, or allowing state universities to discriminate against Asian students in the name of increasing diversity violates the “equal protection of the laws” requirement. (So, of course, does killing voter ID laws, allowing unqualified voters to cast ballots or qualified ones to vote more than once, thus making real votes of less weight.) Rereading the book made me proud to have been a Goldwater volunteer. (Of course, the Vietnam war was my fault—liberals told me if I supported Barry, We go to war in Asia. I did and we did.) This book is short—you can read it over a weekend, clear and still a clarion call for freedom and limited government. One cannot think how appalled Senator Goldwater would be at developments in America since 2008.

This is moot now, of course, but has an entertaining review of quirky Wisconsin candidates. My favorite fringe candidate was a fellow who lived in Lunenburg, Massachusetts, the town I lived in when I first ran for the state senate. Every election, he’d show up and write himself in for every office, from President to Town Water Board. This was well known, because when I ran in 1972, all 12 communities in the district used paper ballots. In 1972, at the recount, we learned that he had again voted for himself for every office—except for state senator, where he voted for me! Since I won by nine votes out of over 60,000 votes cast, I was grateful to get his vote away from himself. The last town to come in, Shirley, put me ahead for the first time at 6:30 am Wednesday morning. Luckily I won the recount by 126, or the Democrats would have appointed a committee, reviewed the ballots, thrown out ten of mine on technicalities and seated the incumbent Democrat. But as the Senate President later told me, 126 was too many to throw out. Bad PR. ~Bob.

Palestinianism (Follow up comment on earlier post)
If China can govern Tibet as an autonomous region and Russia can govern any number of autonomous republics, Israel should declare the formal creation of fully autonomous self governing statelets of Judea-Samaria and Gaza. Israel is already supporting these polities and should make it official. If Palestinians want "independence," they are talking about borders and border control, they must negotiate without dictating prior terms. It should be made clear to them that the longer they fail to negotiate, the weaker their negotiating position will become. Meanwhile the Arabs of those territories enjoy more control over their own lives than do Chechenyans and Tibetans. The Palestinians have already rejected creation of a worthless currency and manage quite well with shekels and dollars and the transfer they extort for the US and Europeans.
