ALABAMA LEGISLATURE PASSES NEW IMMIGRATION BILL
CNN reports that Alabama lawmakers passed a new bill, HB 658, Wednesday aiming to improve the state’s existing law (HB 56) cracking down on illegal immigration. The bill was approved by both the state House and Senate in one day though Alabama Governor Robert Bentley will have the final say. Jeremy King, a spokesman for Gov. Bentley said the goal is to “emerge with an immigration bill that is simplified, clarified, more effective, and enforceable.”
Though the bill does not address parts of the law being challenged in federal courts, Alabama Sen. Dick Brewbaker says the new bill addresses unintended consequences of the state’s immigration law. In particular, HB 658 clarifies acceptable forms of official documentation. Critics argue the new measure is even harsher than last year’s immigration law, which bypassed Arizona’s as the toughest in the nation.
