Congress is trying to work out a deal this week to extend the payroll tax break for working Americans. One most logical proposal would finance part of it by eliminating billions of dollars given in tax credits to illegal aliens.
According to the Treasury Department, $4.2 billion in refundable credits were paid in 2010 to those who filed returns using Individual Tax Identification Numbers (ITINs), a group composed mostly of illegal workers. Only those eligible to work in the U.S. receive Social Security numbers, but the IRS allows illegal aliens to file using ITINs and then receive Child Tax Credits even if they paid no income taxes.
