RALSTON WATCH
Nugget #1: University Regent Ron Knecht inked an op-ed for the Nevada Appeal on today that blasts holes in a recent liberal think tank’s claims regarding higher ed funding in Nevada…
“A recent Brookings Institute study on economic growth in Nevada…was marred by a high-profile false claim it made that provided red meat for the statists who dominate academe and the mainstream media. Smash-mouth left-wing pundit Jon Ralston trumpeted gleefully Brookings' claim that Nevada not only underfunds higher education, but is last among comparable states by a significant margin. The claim is a classic Big Lie. Nevada's higher-education funding is in the mainstream and even high by some measures.”
Knecht went on to note that “Nevada higher-education regents, administrators and faculty are working to improve academic quality” in Nevada’s university system despite “challenges of a Great Recession caused mainly by public-sector excesses that Brookings, Ralston and other statists promote. Our efforts are hindered, not helped, by the Chicken Little squawks of ideologues and special interests.”

Nugget #2: New information comes to me about Jon Ralston’s favorite “thoughtful” conservative, Orrin Johnson.
As you may recall, Johnson ran for the state Assembly last year, losing to Pat Hickeyin the GOP primary. You might also recall that Johnson refused to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, which is one of the reasons Ralston loves the guy so much.
Well, a couple weeks ago, Johnson – egged on by Ralston – wrote a blog post accusing me of ethical transgressions and violating IRS rules relating to a press release we distributed via email to our supporters – a complaint actually filed by another clod-blogger named Bob “Pudd’nhead” Hastings.
Anyway, during the 2010 campaign season, another Reno Republican candidate namedEllie Lopez-Bowlan researched and drafted a statement on illegal immigration for an e-interview Nevada News & Views did on her campaign and race. Now get this…
Apparently Johnson took the information from Lopez-Bowlan’s interview and used it,word-for-word, on a campaign flyer for his own campaign. He even plagiarized the material in a press release! And when confronted about it, Johnson reportedly said he saw nothing wrong with what he’d done.
This is Ralston’s idea of a “thoughtful” conservative? This is a guy who dares question someone else’s ethics? Physician, heal thyself.
