CA SHOP OWNER FINED $400,000 for HIRING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS
 

U.S. District Judge Thomas Whelan slapped the owner of a popular San Diego restaurant with $400,000 fine and five years of probation for hiring 91 illegal immigrants over the course of several years.

Michel Malecot, a naturalized U.S. citizen from France, appeared to hire undocumented immigrants at The French Gourmet out of compassion rather than to take advantage of them according to the judge.

The case has drawn attention from restaurant owners across the country because criminal prosecutions of employers are fairly rare since it is difficult for federal prosecutors to prove that employers knowingly hired illegal immigrants.
