JUDGE REFUSES TO BLOCK ALABAMA IMMIGRATION LAW
Despite Obama’s pleas, a federal judge has again refused to halt Alabama’s tough anti-illegal immigration law prompting some Hispanics to leave the state. On September 28, District Judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn backed the law allowing police to detain people suspected of being in the country illegal if they cannot produce proper documentation when stopped for any other reason. The judge also upheld a provision that permits the state to require schools to determine the legal residency of children. The law in its first week is already having an effect as seven percent of Hispanic students enrolled in public schools have been absent as their parents pack up and leave the state.
