hero, they turned to pink clad Wendy Davis with, as Vogue described
her, “Barbie-doll looks”. They might live to regret that.
Back in 1996, Wendy Davis lost an election for the Fort Worth, TX
City Council. After the election, she sued the Fort Worth
Star-Telegram, the local newspaper, for defamation. In short, Davis did
not like being criticized by the media (something she won’t have to
worry about this go round), so she sued for those criticisms claiming
they defamed her.
The Texas Court of Appeals and then the Texas Supreme Court both
threw out her case. But it is worth noting that Davis, in making her
case, claimed that the nasty newspaper, by virtue of criticizing her,
damaged her “mental health.”

GOVERNMENT & POLITICSOff Year Elections: Lessons Learned?
Tuesday's main events were the
off-year elections in New Jersey and Virginia, and political
prognosticators always look for trends that may be useful for the coming
national elections. Let's just say the lessons Tuesday are mixed.
Beginning in New Jersey,
Republican Gov. Chris Christie won a resounding re-election bid with
more than 60% of the vote in a blue state. Christie is no "Tea Party"
conservative, but he has governed on the conservative side, winning
pension reform for public employees, tenure reform for teachers that
makes it easier to fire bad ones, and vetoing an ill-advised tax
increase on the wealthy. On the other hand, he banned
gender-disorientation therapy, has generally been ornery toward
conservative national Republicans and runs a state still mired at the
bottom economically. Still, Christie worked well across the isle and
made significant outreach to minorities who supplied his margin of
victory -- that's what hugging Barack Obama can do. He is well
positioned to make a run at the GOP presidential nomination in 2016, and
it's worth remembering that Ronald Reagan was the last true
conservative to win that nomination.

CONGRESS KNEW BEFORE SNOWDEN TOLD ALL
After
9/11, Binney and a small team created a computer program constantly
scanning data from cell phones and emails aimed at finding terrorist
activity.
“The idea was how
can you look into terrabytes of data going by every minute and see
what’s important in that data that you need to pull out to look at and
analyze to figure out intentions, capabilities of potential enemies in
the world,” he said.
But Binney soon became concerned that the government was spying on average Americans.
“The
data that was being taken in was all about United States citizens,” he
said. “They’re destroying our democracy is what they’re doing.”
Controversy
about the tracking program went public earlier this year when another
Maryland man, Edward Snowden, leaked classified documents. However, WJZ
has learned Congress may have had a warning about this years ago.
That’s when Binney says he first raised concerns his program had been
turned against Americans.
