Yet according to a RAND study, these plans have the potential to reduce health care spending by 30% without causing any harm, even to vulnerable populations. In what follows, I will review some of the advantages and disadvantages of the various health savings options, based on a recent post of mine at Health Affairs. Let colleges take some of the heat if student loans don't pan out. We all know that BS or BA degrees in, say, psychology, are a dime a dozen and the chances that these degrees will pan out in the form of high-paying careers are on the slim side (these grads get jobs, but most are low-paid. The colleges know that, but no one is talking about that. After all, they have to pay the salaries of the psych profs and that requires a fresh batch of suckers every year or these poor folks get the boot -- exactly what they deserve for scamming students.

A new undercover investigation shows in graphic detail how more than 6,000 goats and pigs are intentionally maimed -- while they're still alive and many without adequate anesthesia -- in military medical training exercises every year.
The Department of Defense says trainers slice open live animals and saw off their limbs in order to train medics in how to treat human injuries. But medical professionals, veterans and advocates counter that this kind of cruelty to animals is no longer necessary -- and is, in fact, counterproductive --- when more effective human-patient simulators can be used instead.

Marine Corps Heritage Foundation 2012 Awards Dinner

On Saturday, April 21, 2012, Bonnie and I attended the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation 2012 Awards Dinner at the Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico. I was one of about 16 individuals receiving awards for various types of media depictions of the Corps, from photos, to books, to articles to movies. I was honored to receive the Robert A. Gannon writing award for poetry for my book, Old Jarhead Poems: The Heart of a Marine. Posted here are photos and information about the evening. To give you an idea of how great an evening it was, at our table was Col. Barney Barnum, USMC Ret. who received the Medal of Honor in Vietnam.
