Fed Bank President Criticizes Recent Republican Letter to Fed

DALLAS – A top Federal Reserve official Friday called a recent letter from Republican leaders critical of central bank policy inappropriate and ineffective.

The leaders sent the letter to the Fed on September 19, the day before its latest policy meeting. The letter advised Fed members to ”resist further extraordinary intervention in the U.S. economy."

"It had no impact on me or any of my colleagues," Richard Fisher, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, said in an interview with FOX Business. "I don't think it's appropriate. It's just like us telling them the specifics of fiscal policy. And I do think that it’s uncalled for."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats want tax hikes to be the first item negotiated in "super committee" deficit-reduction talks, trying to force Republicans to confront an issue at the heart of this year's budget fights, sources told Reuters. The tough stance by Democratic members of the powerful 12-member congressional panel reflects the party's wariness that Republicans might try to sideline the issue of revenue increases in the negotiations.
"They've raised the idea of doing taxes first," a Republican aide involved in the discussions said on Friday on condition of anonymity.

WASHINGTON - Late Friday, the White House turned over new documents in the Congressional investigation into the ATF "Fast and Furious" gunwalking scandal.

The documents show extensive communications between then-ATF Special Agent in Charge of the Phoenix office Bill Newell - who led Fast and Furious - and then-White House National Security Staffer Kevin O'Reilly. Emails indicate the two also spoke on the phone. Such detailed, direct communications between a local ATF manager in Phoenix and a White House national security staffer has raised interest among Congressional investigators looking into Fast and Furious. Newell has said he and O'Reilly are long time friends.

The Arizona/Massachusetts driving tests cause confusion and safety concerns.

Massachusetts recently identified hundreds of refugees who obtained Massachusetts driver’s licenses by converting from Arizonalicenses. By taking advantage of Arizona’s lax language and testing requirements, non-English speakers were able to take driving tests with translators, or bypass state testing altogether by training and testing with private driving schools (circumventing the Department of Motor Vehicles). While Massachusetts offers the written exam in 26 languages, it does not allow the written tests to be taken with a translator as Arizona does.
